This evening prayer for kindness is for the end of the day, when you are tired and the hours have not all gone the way you hoped. It asks God to forgive the sharp word, to soften your heart toward the people you met, and to make you gentle as you rest. Pray it at bedtime, on the couch after dinner, or in the car before you go inside. Read it aloud as written, or let it be a starting point and speak your own words after it.

Evening Prayer for Kindness

Lord, I come to you at the close of this day. You saw every conversation I had, every email I answered too quickly, every moment I was short with someone who did not deserve it. I am sorry for the times I was impatient with my family, curt with the cashier, or dismissive of a coworker who only wanted to be heard. Forgive me, and cleanse me of the resentment I carried home with me.

Thank you for the kindnesses I received today, the small ones I almost missed: a friend who asked how I was doing, a stranger who held the door, a child who said thank you without being told. Help me remember them with gratitude instead of letting them pass by unnoticed. Let those gifts remind me of your patience with me.

As I lie down, I give you the people I am worried about and the ones I found hard to love today. Give me a tender heart toward them tomorrow, and the wisdom to speak gently when I am tempted to speak harshly. Guard my sleep and my home tonight, and wake me with a readiness to serve the people you put in my path. Amen.

A Shorter Version to Pray in a Moment

Lord, I am tired, and I know I did not always treat people with the kindness you ask of me today. Forgive me where I fell short. Thank you for the grace that covers my failures. Soften my heart before I sleep, and help me meet tomorrow with a gentler word and a patient spirit. Keep me and the people I love in your care tonight. Amen.

Scriptures to Pray Alongside

Ephesians 4:32

And be kind to one another, tender hearted, forgiving each other, just as God also in Christ forgave you.

(WEB)

Read this verse slowly before you pray, and let it name the standard you are asking God to form in you. Then bring to him the specific people you were unkind to today and ask for the grace to forgive them as he has forgiven you.

Colossians 3:12

Put on therefore, as God’s chosen ones, holy and beloved, a heart of compassion, kindness, lowliness, humility, and perseverance…

(WEB)

Pray this verse by naming each quality it lists, asking God to clothe you with them one by one. Notice which one you most need tonight, and let that quality shape how you approach tomorrow’s first conversation.

Psalm 103:8

The LORD is merciful and gracious, slow to anger, and abundant in loving kindness.

(WEB)

Thank God that he is patient and rich in mercy toward you. Ask him to make you a reflection of that same slow, generous character toward the people who tried your patience today.

Micah 6:8

He has shown you, O man, what is good. What does the LORD require of you, but to act justly, to love mercy, and to walk humbly with your God?

(WEB)

Let this verse become a simple examination at the end of your day. Ask God where you acted justly and mercifully, and where you did not, and trust him to show you how to walk more humbly tomorrow.

1 John 3:18

My little children, let’s not love in word only, or with the tongue only, but in deed and truth.

(WEB)

Pray this verse by asking God to turn your good intentions into actual acts of care. Name one practical kindness you can offer tomorrow, and ask him to open the opportunity and give you the courage to take it.

How to Pray This Prayer

Pray this prayer in the last few minutes before you turn out the light, while your phone is charging in another room and the house has gone quiet. If your hands need something to do, hold a glass of water or the edge of your pillow, and let the physical stillness help your thoughts settle. If you share a home, you might pray it aloud together, taking turns reading a paragraph each.

Consider keeping a short written list beside your bed. Jot down the names of people you want to treat more kindly tomorrow, and read the list back to God as the final step of the prayer. A spouse, a child, or a friend who prays with you can also add their own requests, so the kindness you ask for becomes a shared concern rather than a private burden.

A Blessing to Close

May the Lord who forgives you tonight also teach you to forgive others with ease. May his patience settle over your home and over the hearts you carry, and may his kindness be the first thing you offer when morning comes. Rest well, knowing you are held.
