This short morning prayer is for the people you love, the family members, friends and neighbors whose days you want to commend to God before your own begins. Pray it when you first wake up, while the house is still quiet, or in the minutes before you start your commute or the first demands of the day arrive. You can read it aloud exactly as written, or use it as a starting point and speak in your own words about the particular people on your heart.

Short Morning Prayer for Loved Ones

Lord, thank you for this new morning. Before I think about my own list, I bring the people I love to you. Be with my spouse as they get ready for work, with my children as they get dressed and find their shoes, and with my parents as they face another day of aches, appointments and worries I may not fully see. Go ahead of them into their meetings, their classrooms, their conversations and their long drives. Where they are anxious about money, health, or a decision they cannot undo, give them a steady peace that does not depend on how the day turns out.

Father, guard the people I love from harm they cannot see and from the careless words they might hear or speak today. Give them patience when they are tired, kindness when someone is rude, and courage for the thing they have been dreading. Heal what is sick, comfort whoever is grieving, and remind each of them that they are known by you. I trust you with the hours I cannot control and the people I cannot be with. Keep them close, and let my love for them today reflect your love for them. Amen.

A Shorter Version to Pray in a Moment

Lord, I hand you the people I love before the day begins. Walk with them at work, at school and at home. Give them strength for what is hard, peace where they are worried, and joy in the small good things. Keep them safe, guide their choices, and let them feel your nearness today. Amen.

Scriptures to Pray Alongside

Psalm 121:7-8

7 The LORD will keep you from all evil. He will keep your soul. 8 The LORD will keep your going out and your coming in, from this time forward, and forever more.

(WEB)

Pray this over the people you love as they leave the house and move through the day. Ask the Lord to keep their going out and coming in, especially on the drives and errands where danger or distraction can surprise them.

Lamentations 3:22-23

22 It is because of the LORD’s loving kindnesses that we are not consumed, because his compassion doesn’t fail. 23 They are new every morning. Great is your faithfulness.

(WEB)

Use this verse when you feel the weight of a new day. Thank God that his mercies are renewed each morning, and ask that your loved ones would wake to that same fresh kindness.

Philippians 4:6-7

6 In nothing be anxious, but in everything, by prayer and petition with thanksgiving, let your requests be made known to God. 7 And the peace of God, which surpasses all understanding, will guard your hearts and your thoughts in Christ Jesus.

(WEB)

Bring the worries you hold for your family to God in prayer, naming each concern. Ask that the peace of God would guard their hearts and minds even when their circumstances stay uncertain.

Isaiah 40:31

But those who wait for the LORD will renew their strength. They will mount up with wings like eagles. They will run, and not be weary. They will walk, and not faint.

(WEB)

Pray that the people you love would find renewed strength for the tasks ahead. Ask God to lift the weary and give them the stamina to keep going through a demanding day.

Ephesians 6:10

Finally, be strong in the Lord, and in the strength of his might.

(WEB)

Ask the Lord to make your family members strong in him rather than in their own resources. Pray that they would draw on his power for the battles they face at work, school or in their relationships.

How to Pray This Prayer

Try praying this prayer before you check your phone or start the coffee, while you are still sitting on the edge of the bed or at the kitchen table. Keep a pen nearby and jot down the names of the people you are praying for, so you can return to them later in the week. If you have a hand free, hold a cup of coffee or rest your palm on the table as a reminder that you are placing these people in God’s care.

You can also invite someone else to pray it with you, such as a spouse, a roommate or a friend who texts you each morning. Taking turns to name one person and asking God to bless that person’s day makes the prayer more personal and helps the whole household share the same burden. Some families write the names on a card and place it by the front door.

A Blessing to Close

May the Lord bless the people you love today and keep them in his care. May he make his face shine upon them, be gracious to them, and give them peace as they go about their work and their rest. May they know they are never alone, and may they carry his goodness with them into every hour.
