This simple prayer for children’s friendships is for parents, grandparents, teachers and anyone who cares about a child’s relationships with other kids. Pray it when a child is starting a new school, when a friendship has gone quiet, or when you lie awake wondering who your child is sitting with at lunch. You can read it aloud exactly as written, or use it as a starting point and speak in your own words.

Simple Prayer for Children’s Friendships

Lord, you know every child by name, and you know the friends they need before they know it themselves. I bring you the friendships of my child. Some days they come home happy and full of stories about the playground. Other days they come home quiet, and I cannot tell whether the day was hard or simply long. Help me trust you with the parts I cannot see, and give my child eyes to notice the kids who are lonely at the edges of the room.

Give my child a kind heart that is not easily trampled. Where there are friendships that are good for them, bring those children close and let the bond grow slowly and steadily. Where there are friendships that pull them toward unkindness, show my child how to step back without shame. Protect them from cruelty on the playground, in the group chat, and in the small unspoken exclusions that hurt more than anyone admits. Teach them to be the sort of friend they hope to find.

Father, I also pray for the other children in their life, the ones who feel left out, the ones who are new, and the ones who have no one to sit with. Make my child generous toward them. Make me patient when I want to fix everything. Thank you for being the faithful friend who never leaves. Amen.

A Shorter Version to Pray in a Moment

Lord, watch over my child’s friendships today. Give them a friend who is kind and honest, and help them to be that friend too. Guard them from anyone who would hurt them, and show them who to trust. Keep their heart soft and their courage strong. I trust you with the people around them. Amen.

Scriptures to Pray Alongside

A friend loves at all times; and a brother is born for adversity.

Pray this verse for your child’s friendships by asking God to show them what real loyalty looks like. Ask that they would be drawn to friends who stay steady in hard seasons, and that they would become that kind of friend in return.

Ecclesiastes 4:9-10

9 Two are better than one, because they have a good reward for their labor. 10 For if they fall, the one will lift up his fellow; but woe to him who is alone when he falls, and doesn’t have another to lift him up.

(WEB)

Use these verses to thank God that no child has to face the hard parts of growing up alone. Pray that your child would have someone close enough to help them up when they stumble, and that they would be that helper for another child too.

1 Thessalonians 5:11

Therefore exhort one another, and build each other up, even as you also do.

(WEB)

Pray this verse over the encouragement your child gives and receives. Ask God to help them build up their friends with honest, warm words, especially on the days when someone seems to be struggling quietly.

John 15:13

Greater love has no one than this, that someone lay down his life for his friends.

(WEB)

Let this verse point your child toward the greatest friend of all. Pray that they would come to know Jesus as a friend who loves them completely, and that this love would shape how they treat the children around them.

Romans 12:10

In love of the brothers be tenderly affectionate to one another; in honor preferring one another…

(WEB)

Pray that your child would learn to honor their friends above themselves. Ask God to give them a generous spirit, so that they celebrate others’ successes and show care without needing to be the center of attention.

How to Pray This Prayer

Many families find it helps to pray this prayer at bedtime, once the day has settled and there is room to ask about friends without rushing. Sit beside your child, or place a hand on their shoulder while you speak. If you are praying alone, try it on the drive to school or during a quiet moment when you are making lunches. Keep a small notebook nearby so you can jot down names of friends or teachers as they come up.

You can also invite your child to pray with you. Ask them who they would like God to bless at school this week, and let their answers guide the words you speak. Other adults who love your child, such as grandparents, godparents, or a Sunday school teacher, can pray this prayer too. Sharing the request widens the circle of people asking God to care for your child’s friendships.

A Blessing to Close

May the Lord go before your child into every classroom, playground, and team. May he give them friends who are honest, kind, and faithful, and may they grow into friends who bring light to others. May your child rest in the knowledge that they are known and loved.
