This short morning prayer is for the start of a day that involves travel, whether that means a commute, a long drive, a flight, a school run, or simply the many small movements from one task to the next. Pray it as soon as you wake or while you are dressing, getting ready to leave, or sitting in the car before you turn the key. You can read it aloud exactly as written, or use it as a starting point and put your own words in where your day calls for them.

Short Morning Prayer for My Journey

Lord, I start this day by handing you the road ahead. You know the route I will take, the traffic I will meet, the people I will see and the tasks waiting for me when I arrive. Go before me in each of them. Keep me alert on the highway and patient in the slow lines, and let my hands stay steady on the wheel, the keyboard or whatever I am carrying. Guard the people who travel with me and the people I will meet along the way.

Father, some of today already feels heavy. I think of the meeting I am dreading, the phone call I have been putting off, and the person I need to speak kindly to even though I am tired. Give me clear thoughts when I am rushed and a calm voice when I am frustrated. Where I am tempted to hurry past someone who needs me, slow my steps and open my eyes. Let me carry your peace with me so that it is not left at the front door.

Thank you for the gift of this morning and for going with me every mile of it. Whatever I face, I do not face it alone. Walk with me today, and bring me home at the end of it. Amen.

A Shorter Version to Pray in a Moment

Lord, I am heading out into this day, and I give you each mile and each meeting. Keep me safe on the road and steady in my work. Help me be kind to the people I pass and honest with the people I serve. Go with me now, and bring me home. Amen.

Scriptures to Pray Alongside

Psalm 121:8

The LORD will keep your going out and your coming in, from this time forward, and forever more.

(WEB)

Use this verse to pray over the going out and the coming in, asking God to watch over each departure and each return today. Let it steady you when you feel anxious about leaving home or arriving somewhere new.

Proverbs 3:5-6

5 Trust in the LORD with all your heart, and don’t lean on your own understanding. 6 In all your ways acknowledge him, and he will make your paths straight.

(WEB)

Pray this when your plans for the day feel uncertain or the schedule keeps changing. Ask God to guide your steps, especially where you cannot see what is coming around the next turn.

Isaiah 40:31

But those who wait for the LORD will renew their strength. They will mount up with wings like eagles. They will run, and not be weary. They will walk, and not faint.

(WEB)

Bring this verse to God when you feel worn down before the day has even started. Ask him to renew your strength for the walking, the driving and the long hours ahead.

Psalm 139:9-10

9 If I take the wings of the dawn, and settle in the uttermost parts of the sea; 10 Even there your hand will lead me, and your right hand will hold me.

(WEB)

Pray this when you feel far from home or from the people you love. It reminds you that God’s hand reaches into every place you go, including the unfamiliar roads and unfamiliar rooms.

Philippians 4:6-7

6 In nothing be anxious, but in everything, by prayer and petition with thanksgiving, let your requests be made known to God. 7 And the peace of God, which surpasses all understanding, will guard your hearts and your thoughts in Christ Jesus.

(WEB)

Use this passage when your mind is racing with everything you need to remember. Turn each worry into a request, and ask God to guard your heart and thoughts as you move through the day.

How to Pray This Prayer

Pray this in the first few minutes after you wake, while the house is quiet, or in the car before you pull out of the drive. Sitting with your hands resting on the steering wheel, your bag, or your open planner can help you slow down and mean each line. If you have a child, partner or coworker who is also heading out, you can pray the prayer over them by name, changing “me” to “them” wherever it fits.

If you are short on time, pick the shorter version and say it once with your eyes open, glancing at the road or the clock as you go. Coming back to it at a red light, in a train queue or while waiting for the kettle can turn small pauses into moments of quiet. Over time, the words will become familiar, and you will find them rising up on their own when the day gets busy.

A Blessing to Close

May the Lord go before you, keep you on every road, and steady your hands and heart for all that the day holds. May you arrive where you are going with peace in your heart and grace in your words, and may you return home with thanks on your lips.
