This short morning prayer is for asking God to shape your heart, mind and habits as you start the day. Pray it when you first wake up, before your phone or your to-do list gets your attention, or in the car, at the kitchen sink, or on the walk to the bus stop. You can read it aloud exactly as written, or use it as a starting point and put your own words in where your hopes and struggles are different.

Short Morning Prayer for My Spiritual Growth

Lord, thank you for this new morning. Before I check my messages or think about the meetings, errands and conversations waiting for me, I want to bring you my heart. I know I am not finished growing. I still lose my patience with the people I love most, I still reach for distraction when I should reach for you, and I still forget that you are with me in ordinary tasks. Teach me to notice you today, in the small moments as much as the big ones.

Give me a steady hunger for your Word, even when I am tired or rushed. Let me hear your voice in what I read and let it change how I speak to my coworkers, my family and the stranger who cuts me off in traffic. Where I am proud, make me humble. Where I am afraid, remind me that you are faithful. Help me take one honest step toward you before the day runs away with me.

Father, I give you the hours ahead, the people I will see and the choices I will make. Grow in me the fruit of your Spirit, and let my life show it quietly, without needing to be noticed. Use this day to make me a little more like Jesus than I was yesterday. Amen.

A Shorter Version to Pray in a Moment

Lord, I am starting this day with you. Make me more patient, more honest and more attentive to your presence than I was yesterday. Show me one way to love well today, and give me the courage to do it. Help me grow in you, not by my own effort but by staying close to you. Amen.

Scriptures to Pray Alongside

Psalm 143:10

Teach me to do your will, for you are my God. Your Spirit is good. Lead me in the land of uprightness.

(WEB)

Pray this as a request for direction. Ask God to teach you his will and lead you on level ground, especially in the decisions you will face before evening.

Romans 12:2

Don’t be conformed to this world, but be transformed by the renewing of your mind, so that you may prove what is the good, well-pleasing, and perfect will of God.

(WEB)

Ask God to renew your mind so that your thinking, not just your habits, begins to change. Pray it when you feel pulled toward the patterns of the world around you.

Galatians 5:22-23

22 But the fruit of the Spirit is love, joy, peace, patience, kindness, goodness, faith, 23 gentleness, and self-control. Against such things there is no law.

(WEB)

Name each quality of the Spirit’s fruit as you pray, asking God to grow the one you most need today, whether patience, kindness or self-control.

Philippians 1:6

Being confident of this very thing, that he who began a good work in you will complete it until the day of Jesus Christ.

(WEB)

Thank God that the work he began in you is not abandoned. Pray this when you feel discouraged by how slowly you seem to change.

Lamentations 3:22-23

22 It is because of the LORD’s loving kindnesses that we are not consumed, because his compassion doesn’t fail. 23 They are new every morning. Great is your faithfulness.

(WEB)

Pray this to start the day with trust rather than dread. Ask God to help you receive his mercy afresh, since his compassions are renewed each morning.

How to Pray This Prayer

Try praying this as soon as your feet touch the floor, before you pick up a phone or turn on the news. Sitting on the edge of the bed with a cup of coffee in your hands works well, since the warmth gives your body something to focus on while your heart settles. If you have a few spare minutes, read one of the verses above slowly, then pray the prayer again in your own words.

You might also pray it alongside someone who shares your desire to grow. A spouse, a close friend or a small group can each pray one line aloud, which turns a private habit into a shared commitment. Write the prayer on an index card and keep it in your bag or on the bathroom mirror, so you have something to return to when the day gets busy.

A Blessing to Close

May the Lord who began a good work in you keep working in you through this day. May he guard your steps, steady your heart and show you the next faithful thing to do. May you walk with quiet confidence, knowing that the God who sees you in the morning is with you until evening.
