This prayer is for a small group that meets to study Scripture, share life, and pray together, whether that is a Bible study in a living room, a Sunday evening circle at church, or a weekly gathering of friends who have agreed to walk alongside one another. Pray it before your group meets, at the start of the evening, or on your own during the week as you remember the people who sit around the table with you. You can read it aloud exactly as written or use it as a starting point and speak in your own words.

Prayer for a Small Group

Lord, thank you for gathering us together. We did not choose each other the way we might choose friends from a list, yet you have placed us in this circle for a reason we do not always see. Be present in this room when we meet. Quiet the noise we carry in from work, from traffic, and from the messages on our phones, so that we can actually listen to one another and to you. Make us honest without being careless, and gentle without being shallow.

Father, some of us are carrying heavy things right now: a diagnosis we are still trying to understand, a marriage under strain, a child who has stopped answering our calls, a job that feels like it is slipping away. Let this group be a place where those burdens can be spoken without fear of judgment. Give us ears that wait before they respond and hearts that do not rush to fix. Where someone is grieving, let us grieve with them. Where someone is celebrating, let us rejoice without comparison. Help us to bear one another’s weight without pretending it is light.

Keep us faithful in showing up, even on the weeks when we feel tired or unsure. Guard us from gossip, from pride, and from the quiet habit of keeping score. Teach us to pray for each other by name, to follow up when we say we will, and to speak truth in love when it is needed. Shape us into people who look more like Jesus each time we leave this table. Amen.

A Shorter Version to Pray in a Moment

Lord, bless the people in my small group. Be with each of them this week, especially those who are struggling in ways they have not shared. Help me to listen well, to speak kindly, and to show up when I say I will. Make this group a safe place to be honest and a place where your love is felt. Hold us together in you. Amen.

Scriptures to Pray Alongside

Matthew 18:20

For where two or three are gathered together in my name, there I am in the middle of them.”

(WEB)

Jesus promises his presence wherever two or three gather in his name. Pray this verse before your group begins, thanking him that the meeting is not only about the people in the room but about the One who has promised to be among them.

Galatians 6:2

Bear one another’s burdens, and so fulfill the law of Christ.

(WEB)

Paul calls believers to carry one another’s burdens. Use this verse to ask God to show you which member of your group needs practical help this week, and to give you willingness to offer it.

Romans 12:15

Rejoice with those who rejoice. Weep with those who weep.

(WEB)

This verse invites us to share both joy and sorrow with others. Pray it for the moments when someone in your group is celebrating a win or mourning a loss, asking God to make your response genuine.

Ecclesiastes 4:9-10

9 Two are better than one, because they have a good reward for their labor. 10 For if they fall, the one will lift up his fellow; but woe to him who is alone when he falls, and doesn’t have another to lift him up.

(WEB)

The writer observes that two are better than one, especially when one falls. Pray this passage for the value of companionship in your group, asking God to strengthen the bonds that help people stand when they stumble.

Proverbs 27:17

Iron sharpens iron; so a man sharpens his friend’s countenance.

(WEB)

Iron sharpens iron, and one person sharpens another. Pray this verse for the way your group challenges and encourages each other, asking God to keep the sharpening honest, kind, and aimed at growth in Christ.

How to Pray This Prayer

Choose a regular moment that fits your rhythm. Many groups pray at the very beginning of the meeting, before the coffee cools and the conversation drifts. If you pray alone, try doing it on the drive over or in the few minutes before you walk through the door. Keep a small notebook or a note on your phone with the names of group members and their current needs, so that your prayer becomes specific rather than general.

Invite others to pray too. Ask each person to add one sentence of their own after you finish reading, or to name someone they are praying for. A prayer that is shared by several voices tends to draw the room closer together. Afterward, consider following up with one member during the week by text or a short call to ask how they are doing, which turns this prayer into an ongoing act of love.

A Blessing to Close

May the Lord go before each person in this group and behind them, keeping them in every season. May he fill their homes with peace, their work with purpose, and their friendships with patience and joy. May his face shine upon this circle, and may each one leave the room knowing they are known, held, and deeply loved.
