This simple prayer for our family is written for the moments when a household needs God’s presence more than anything else, whether at the start of a busy week, around the dinner table, or at bedtime when worries feel loud. Pray it aloud exactly as written, or use it as a starting point and add the names and needs of the people you love most.

Simple Prayer for Our Family

Lord, thank You for the family You have given me. Thank You for the people who share my home and my name, and for the ones who are far away but still held in my heart. You know each of us by name, and You know the things we carry that nobody else sees. Be near to us today.

Give us patience with one another when tempers run short and schedules pull us in different directions. Soften our words where we have been sharp, and help us to listen before we speak. Where there is tension between us, bring reconciliation in Your time. Where someone is struggling with health, school, work, or grief, let them feel Your nearness and the strength of those who love them.

Protect our home from fear and from the careless harm that comes from anger and pride. Teach us to serve one another with joy, to forgive quickly, and to celebrate the small good things. Keep our family rooted in Your truth, and let our lives point others toward You. Amen.

A Shorter Version to Pray in a Moment

Father, my family is in Your hands. Calm what is anxious, heal what is hurting, and guard what is precious. Give us kindness for one another and wisdom for the next decision. Help us to trust You with the things we cannot fix. Thank You for being faithful to us every day. Amen.

Scriptures to Pray Alongside

Psalm 127:1

Unless the LORD builds the house, they labor in vain who build it. Unless the LORD watches over the city, the watchman guards it in vain.

(WEB)

Use this verse to remind yourself that a home is built by God, not by our effort alone. Pray that He would be the foundation under every room, every routine, and every conversation in your family.

Ephesians 4:2-3

2 With all lowliness and humility, with patience, bearing with one another in love; 3 being eager to keep the unity of the Spirit in the bond of peace.

(WEB)

Pray this passage over the areas where your family finds it hardest to be patient and gentle. Ask God to help each person bear with the others and keep the peace that holds you together.

Joshua 24:15

If it seems evil to you to serve the LORD, choose today whom you will serve; whether the gods which your fathers served that were beyond the River, or the gods of the Amorites, in whose land you dwell; but as for me and my house, we will serve the LORD.”

(WEB)

Joshua made a public commitment that his household would serve the Lord. Pray that your family would choose God together, and that each person would own that choice in their own heart.

Colossians 3:13

Bearing with one another, and forgiving each other, if any man has a complaint against any; even as Christ forgave you, so you also do.

(WEB)

Bring to God any hurt or grudge that lingers between family members. Ask Him to give the grace to forgive as you have been forgiven, one honest conversation at a time.

Psalm 121:7-8

7 The LORD will keep you from all evil. He will keep your soul. 8 The LORD will keep your going out and your coming in, from this time forward, and forever more.

(WEB)

Pray this as a promise of protection for everyone who goes out and comes in. Thank God that His watch over your family does not pause for a single hour.

How to Pray This Prayer

Many families find that the easiest time to pray is at the dinner table or in the car on the way to school. Choose one moment each day that repeats, so that the prayer becomes a familiar anchor rather than an occasional event. If your children are young, let them hold hands or fold their hands while you speak, and invite them to add one thing they are thankful for.

If you are praying alone while others sleep or work, keep a written copy in a place you will see, such as the kitchen counter or your Bible. You might also invite a grandparent, friend, or small group to pray the same words for your family during the week, so that the prayer is carried by more than one voice.

A Blessing to Close

May the Lord bless your family and keep each one of you in His care. May His face shine on your home, and may His peace settle over every room. Go in that peace, knowing that you are seen, loved, and held together by God.
