This short morning prayer is for the moment you wake up and feel the day pressing in before you have even put your feet on the floor. It asks God for peace that steadies your thoughts and protection over the people and tasks you will meet between now and bedtime. Pray it aloud at the kitchen table with your coffee, read it silently while you dress, or use it as a starting point and speak your own words in your own language.

Short Morning Prayer for Peace and Protection

Father, I come to you before the noise of the day starts. My mind is already moving toward the calendar, the messages waiting on my phone, the conversation I have been dreading, and the people I am responsible for. Quiet my thoughts and settle my heart. Give me the kind of peace that does not depend on how the day unfolds, the peace that holds steady when plans change and when someone is short with me.

Protect me today, Lord, in the places I cannot see into. Guard my body on the road, my words in the meetings, and my heart in the moments of temptation or discouragement. Watch over the people I love and the people I will meet, especially the ones who are struggling in ways I may never learn about. Keep us from harm, both the kind that comes from outside and the kind that grows within us when we are tired or afraid. Let me walk through this day as someone who belongs to you, trusting that you go before me. Amen.

A Shorter Version to Pray in a Moment

Lord, I am starting this day in need of you. Settle my mind and steady my breath. Keep my family, my coworkers, and me safe as we go out the door. Let your peace go with me into every room I enter, and help me remember that you are already there. Amen.

You will keep whoever’s mind is steadfast in perfect peace, because he trusts in you.

How to Pray This Prayer

Choose a fixed moment, such as the first few minutes after your alarm or the time you sit down with your first cup of tea, so that the prayer becomes a habit rather than something you remember only on hard days. If your hands need something to do, hold a cup, a Bible, or a small object from your home while you speak. Some people find it helpful to pray with their palms open, as a sign that they are releasing the day to God.

You can also pray this prayer with someone else. A spouse, a roommate, or a friend on the phone can take turns reading the lines, which makes it easier to remember the people you are asking God to protect. Keep a list nearby of names and situations, and add to it as the week goes on, so the morning prayer grows with your life.

A Blessing to Close

May the Lord go before you and beside you today, keeping you steady in every hour. May his peace guard your heart and your mind, and may his protection surround the people you love. Walk in that peace and rest in that care, knowing you are never out of his sight.
