These prayers are written for anyone who wants to pray for a church leader, whether that is a pastor, elder, deacon, youth minister, or lay leader carrying responsibility for a congregation. Pray them on a Sunday morning before worship, during the week when a hard decision is pending, or whenever you hear that a leader is tired or discouraged. You can read the prayer aloud exactly as written, or use it as a starting point and speak more freely from there.
Prayers for a Church Leader
Lord, you know the names of the people who lead us, and you know the weight they carry when they stand before the congregation, sit with a grieving family, or lie awake over a budget or a difficult conversation. We ask you to give our pastor and the other leaders wisdom for the decisions that are theirs to make. Where they feel uncertain, steady their hearts and show them the next faithful step. Protect them from the pride that comes with being looked up to, and from the discouragement that comes when people leave, when prayers seem unanswered, or when the work feels too large.
Father, we also ask for their households. Be near to their spouses and children, who often carry the cost of ministry without being thanked for it. Give their families rest, honest friendships, and a sense that they are loved for who they are and not only for the role their parent or spouse fills. Refresh their bodies and their minds with real sleep, time away, and joy that has nothing to do with work. Let them hear your voice more clearly than any voice of criticism. Keep them close to you, and let the people of this church be the kind of family that bears their burdens with them. Amen.
A Shorter Version to Pray in a Moment
Lord, our leaders are tired and you are not. Give our pastor and the elders clear thinking for today, patience with the people in front of them, and courage for whatever must be faced this week. Guard their hearts, protect their families, and let them rest in your love when no one else sees what they have given. We trust you with them. Amen.
Scriptures to Pray Alongside
Hebrews 13:17
Obey your leaders and submit to them, for they watch on behalf of your souls, as those who will give account, that they may do this with joy, and not with groaning, for that would be unprofitable for you.

Pray this verse for the leaders who keep watch over your church, asking that their work would be a joy and not a burden. Ask God to help the congregation respond to their guidance with respect and cooperation.
1 Thessalonians 5:12-13
12 But we beg you, brothers, to know those who labor among you, and are over you in the Lord, and admonish you, 13 and to respect and honor them in love for their work’s sake. Be at peace among yourselves.
(WEB)
Thank God for the leaders who labor among you, and pray that the church would honor them and live at peace with them. Ask that love would grow in both directions.
Ephesians 4:11-12
11 He gave some to be apostles; and some, prophets; and some, evangelists; and some, shepherds and teachers; 12 for the perfecting of the saints, to the work of serving, to the building up of the body of Christ…
(WEB)
Pray that your leaders would be equipped for the work Christ has given them, and that the whole church would be built up through their service. Ask God to use their gifts for the good of every member.
Acts 20:28
Take heed, therefore, to yourselves, and to all the flock, in which the Holy Spirit has made you overseers, to shepherd the assembly of the Lord and God which he purchased with his own blood.
(WEB)
Pray that your leaders would keep watch over themselves as well as the flock. Ask God to guard their own souls, since their faithfulness depends on his care for them first.
Psalm 127:1
Unless the LORD builds the house, they labor in vain who build it. Unless the LORD watches over the city, the watchman guards it in vain.
(WEB)
Pray this verse when the workload feels impossible. Ask the Lord to build the church himself, so that your leaders can lean on his strength rather than their own.
How to Pray This Prayer
Try praying the longer prayer on the morning of a Sunday service, before your leader steps up to preach or lead the congregation. If you can, write the leader’s name on a card and keep it in your Bible or on the kitchen table, so you remember to pray whenever you see it. Some people find it helpful to pray while walking, letting each sentence set the pace of their steps.
You do not need to pray this alone. Share the prayer with a small group, a prayer chain, or a family member who also knows the leader. Ask a friend to pray the shorter version with you over coffee after church, or send the leader a short note saying you are holding them before God this week. Often the most useful thing you can do for a tired pastor is to let them know someone is praying.
A Blessing to Close
May the Lord who called your leaders keep them steady and send them the rest they need. May he give them joy in the faithful work he has entrusted to them, and may their families feel his nearness every day. May the church grow in love and honor toward them, and may they see the fruit of their labor in the lives around them.
