This short morning prayer is for the week ahead, the seven days stretching out before you with their meetings, deadlines, tired mornings and unexpected phone calls. Pray it first thing, before the day’s noise begins, sitting up in bed or standing at the kitchen sink with a cup of coffee. You can read it aloud exactly as written, or use it as a starting point and add the names and worries that are specific to your own week.

Short Morning Prayer for the Week Ahead

Lord, I come to you before the week gets loud. You know what Monday holds, and you know what Friday will ask of me. You know the email I have been dreading, the conversation with my boss that I keep rehearsing in my head, and the kids who need me to be patient when I am already running low. Be ahead of me in all of it. Go before me into each meeting and each hard decision, and let me meet people with the kindness I would want shown to me.

Give me wisdom for the choices I will have to make this week, big and small. Keep me from rushing past the people who matter most, and from giving my best energy only to the things that will not matter in a year. Steady my thoughts when anxiety starts to build, and remind me that you are not surprised by anything on my calendar. Help me take one day at a time, and then one task at a time within it.

I give you the whole week, the planned parts and the parts I cannot foresee. Thank you for the rest that is still coming, the evenings and the weekend, and the strength you give for each morning as it arrives. Be my peace today and every day this week. Amen.

A Shorter Version to Pray in a Moment

Lord, I am heading into this week and I need you in it. Go before me into the meetings, the deadlines and the people I will meet. Give me patience when I am tired, honesty when I am tempted to avoid a hard conversation, and peace when my thoughts start racing ahead. Help me do what is in front of me today, and trust you with the rest. Amen.

Scriptures to Pray Alongside

Psalm 46:10

“Be still, and know that I am God. I will be exalted among the nations. I will be exalted in the earth.”

(WEB)

Use this verse to slow down before the week speeds up. Pray it when your schedule feels out of control, asking God to quiet your restless thoughts and help you remember who is in charge of the days ahead.

Proverbs 3:5-6

5 Trust in the LORD with all your heart, and don’t lean on your own understanding. 6 In all your ways acknowledge him, and he will make your paths straight.

(WEB)

Bring this verse to the decisions you face this week, especially the ones where you feel unsure. Ask God to guide your steps, and to help you lean on his understanding rather than your own anxious guesses.

Lamentations 3:22-23

22 It is because of the LORD’s loving kindnesses that we are not consumed, because his compassion doesn’t fail. 23 They are new every morning. Great is your faithfulness.

(WEB)

Pray this passage over the start of the week, thanking God that his faithfulness is new each morning. Ask him to remind you that yesterday’s failures and tomorrow’s pressures do not cancel out his mercy for today.

Philippians 4:6-7

6 In nothing be anxious, but in everything, by prayer and petition with thanksgiving, let your requests be made known to God. 7 And the peace of God, which surpasses all understanding, will guard your hearts and your thoughts in Christ Jesus.

(WEB)

Turn this passage into a habit for the week. Whenever worry rises about a deadline or a relationship, bring it to God in specific prayer and ask for the peace that guards your heart and mind.

Isaiah 40:31

But those who wait for the LORD will renew their strength. They will mount up with wings like eagles. They will run, and not be weary. They will walk, and not faint.

(WEB)

Pray this verse for the moments when you feel worn down before the week has even started. Ask God to renew your strength so that you can keep going without losing heart, one step at a time.

How to Pray This Prayer

Pray this prayer while your coffee is still hot, before you check your phone or open your inbox. Choose a quiet spot, such as the edge of your bed, a chair by the window, or the kitchen table, and keep a pen nearby. As you finish, write down the one or two items on your week that worry you most, and place the paper somewhere you will see it later in the day.

If you are praying with a spouse, a roommate or a friend, take turns reading a paragraph each and then name one specific concern from the week aloud. Keep your hands busy if that helps you focus, perhaps holding a Bible, a cup, or a list you are preparing for work. Ending the time together with a quick word of thanks often makes the rest of the morning feel lighter.

A Blessing to Close

May the Lord go before you into every hour of this week and steady you when the day grows long. May he give you the wisdom to choose well, the patience to love the people around you, and a peace that does not depend on how things turn out. May you walk into Monday knowing you are held.
