This short prayer is for the moment when you want to forgive someone but your heart keeps returning to the hurt. You can pray it when you first feel the sting of an offense, at the end of a hard day, or whenever bitterness begins to take up too much room. Read it aloud as written, or use it as a starting point and speak your own words to God.

Short Prayer for a Forgiving Heart

Lord, you know exactly what was done to me, and you know how often I replay it in my mind. I want to let it go, but some days forgiving feels like handing over something I still believe I deserve to keep. Soften what has gone hard in me. Help me see the person who hurt me as someone who also needs your mercy, without pretending the wrong did not happen.

Where I have been keeping score, teach me to set down the list. Where I have been rehearsing angry speeches, quiet them and give me the courage to speak truth in a way that honors you. When the old resentment rises up in the middle of an ordinary afternoon, remind me that you have already forgiven me far more than I could ever owe anyone else. Give me a heart that remembers your kindness toward me.

Father, I bring you the person I am struggling to forgive, and I ask you to bless them and deal with them in your justice and your grace. Keep me from bitterness, and let my forgiveness be real, not just words I say to end the conversation. Heal what I cannot heal on my own. Amen.

A Shorter Version to Pray in a Moment

Lord, I do not want to carry this anger any longer. You have forgiven me and I am grateful. Help me release this person into your hands right now, and soften my heart where it has hardened. Give me the strength to act in love today, even if my feelings have not caught up yet. Amen.

Scriptures to Pray Alongside

Ephesians 4:32

And be kind to one another, tender hearted, forgiving each other, just as God also in Christ forgave you.

(WEB)

Pray this verse by asking God to make your kindness toward the one who hurt you match the kindness he has shown you. Let the reason for forgiving be his grace, not your own sense of fairness.

Colossians 3:13

Bearing with one another, and forgiving each other, if any man has a complaint against any; even as Christ forgave you, so you also do.

(WEB)

Read this verse slowly and thank God for every time he has been patient with you. Ask him to shape that same patience in you toward the person on your mind.

Matthew 6:14-15

14 “For if you forgive men their trespasses, your heavenly Father will also forgive you. 15 But if you don’t forgive men their trespasses, neither will your Father forgive your trespasses.

(WEB)

Bring this passage to God honestly, admitting that forgiveness is hard. Ask him to help you see that releasing others is part of walking in his freedom, not a reward for someone else.

Psalm 103:12

As far as the east is from the west, so far has he removed our transgressions from us.

(WEB)

Pray this verse as you consider the wrong done to you. Thank God that his mercy removes our failures as far as the east is from the west, and ask him to help you let go of what he has already put behind him.

Romans 12:19

Don’t seek revenge yourselves, beloved, but give place to God’s wrath. For it is written, “Vengeance belongs to me; I will repay, says the Lord.”

(WEB)

Use this verse to hand over your desire for revenge. Ask God to be the one who makes things right, so that you are free to pray for the other person instead of plotting against them.

How to Pray This Prayer

Choose a quiet time, such as first thing in the morning or before you go to bed, when you can speak without rushing. Sitting in a chair with your hands open on your lap can help you remember that you are releasing something rather than gripping it tighter. If the hurt flares up later, you can pause wherever you are, breathe slowly, and pray the shorter version under your breath.

You might also pray this with a friend, a spouse, or a small group who can stand with you. Ask them to pray for the person you are trying to forgive as well as for you. Sometimes hearing someone else speak your struggle to God makes it easier to keep coming back to forgiveness on the days it feels impossible.

A Blessing to Close

May the Lord who forgave you fill your heart with his peace and loosen every knot of resentment. May he give you grace to release what you have been holding and the wisdom to walk in freedom. May you rest tonight knowing you are held by a God who is faithful and kind.
