A short prayer for a new year gives you words to bring to God as one season closes and another opens. Pray it on New Year’s Eve, on the first morning of January, or on whatever day you finally sit down to face the blank calendar. You can read it aloud exactly as written, or use it as a starting point and add the names and worries that are on your heart.

Short Prayer for a New Year

Lord, you were here before this year began, and you will be here when it ends. I bring you the days I have already lived, the good ones and the hard ones, and I ask you to forgive what I got wrong and to thank you for what held me up. I don’t know what the coming months will hold. Some of it I’m looking forward to, and some of it makes my stomach tighten when I think about it. Help me not to pretend I have it all figured out.

Give me wisdom for the decisions in front of me, especially the ones about money, work, and the people I love. Keep me from rushing into plans I haven’t prayed over, and keep me patient when things move slower than I want. Where I feel anxious about what is ahead, remind me that you already know every step. Steady my heart and let me rest in your care one day at a time. Amen.

A Shorter Version to Pray in a Moment

Father, this year is new to me, but you are not new to it. I give you my plans, my fears, and the people I’m carrying. Go before me into each month. Give me enough grace for today, and trust that you will supply what tomorrow needs. Keep my heart close to you through all of it. Amen.

Scriptures to Pray Alongside

Lamentations 3:22-23

22 It is because of the LORD’s loving kindnesses that we are not consumed, because his compassion doesn’t fail. 23 They are new every morning. Great is your faithfulness.

(WEB)

Pray this when yesterday’s failures feel heavier than today’s hope. Thank God that his mercies start fresh each morning, and ask him to let that newness shape how you approach the new year.

Psalm 90:12

So teach us to count our days, that we may gain a heart of wisdom.

(WEB)

Use this verse to ask God for a wise and honest sense of how short and precious your days are. Ask him to help you spend this year on what truly matters rather than what merely fills the calendar.

Isaiah 43:19

Behold, I will do a new thing. It springs out now. Don’t you know it? I will even make a way in the wilderness, and rivers in the desert.

(WEB)

This is a good verse for a year that feels uncertain or dry. Pray that God would show you where he is already at work, even in places you hadn’t noticed yet.

Proverbs 3:5-6

5 Trust in the LORD with all your heart, and don’t lean on your own understanding. 6 In all your ways acknowledge him, and he will make your paths straight.

(WEB)

When you are tempted to map out every outcome, pray this passage. Ask God to help you trust his direction more than your own understanding, and to make your paths straight as you follow him.

Philippians 4:6-7

6 In nothing be anxious, but in everything, by prayer and petition with thanksgiving, let your requests be made known to God. 7 And the peace of God, which surpasses all understanding, will guard your hearts and your thoughts in Christ Jesus.

(WEB)

Pray this when the year ahead feels like a pile of worries. Bring each specific concern to God with thanksgiving, and ask for the peace that guards your heart and mind in Christ Jesus.

How to Pray This Prayer

Many people find it helpful to pray this prayer first thing in the morning, before the phone and the news have a chance to fill your head. Sit somewhere quiet, perhaps with a cup of coffee or tea in your hands, and read the prayer slowly. Pause after each paragraph to name one person or one concern you want to add to it.

You might also ask a friend, spouse, or family member to pray it with you, or to read it over you on a phone call or at the kitchen table. Writing the prayer by hand on a card and placing it on your desk or the bathroom mirror can help you return to it through the year. Revisit it whenever a new season starts, not only in January.

A Blessing to Close

May the Lord go before you into every week of this year and walk beside you through every hard day. May he keep your heart steady, your hands busy with good work, and your eyes open to the grace he is already giving you. May you know, in each new month, that you are held.
