This short prayer asks God for daily grace, the steady strength to meet each day’s demands with patience, kindness and trust. It works well first thing in the morning, before the phone and the to-do list take over, though it can be prayed at any hour when the day feels heavier than you can carry. You can read it aloud exactly as written, or use it as a starting point and speak in your own words.

Short Prayer for Daily Grace

Father, I come to you before the day begins. You know what is waiting for me: the work that needs doing, the conversations I would rather avoid, the people who depend on me for more than I feel I have to give. I do not want to start the day by trying to be strong on my own. Give me what I need for this day and no more, and help me trust you with what I cannot see yet.

Where I tend to get short-tempered, make me patient. Where I tend to worry about what might go wrong, quiet my mind and remind me that you are already in tomorrow. When I fail, as I surely will, let me come back to you without shame and receive your mercy again. Let your kindness show through my ordinary words and actions, especially toward the people who are hardest to love. Thank you that your grace is new every morning. I receive it now. Amen.

A Shorter Version to Pray in a Moment

Lord, I am already tired and the day has barely started. Give me the grace to take the next step, and then the one after that. Keep my heart soft and my tongue gentle. Help me remember that I do not have to earn your help; I only have to ask. Be near me in the hard moments and let me sense your presence as I go. Amen.

Scriptures to Pray Alongside

Lamentations 3:22-23

22 It is because of the LORD’s loving kindnesses that we are not consumed, because his compassion doesn’t fail. 23 They are new every morning. Great is your faithfulness.

(WEB)

Pray these words when yesterday’s failures are still weighing on you. Thank God that his mercy is renewed each morning, and ask him to let that fresh mercy shape how you begin today.

2 Corinthians 12:9

He has said to me, “My grace is sufficient for you, for my power is made perfect in weakness.” Most gladly therefore I will rather glory in my weaknesses, that the power of Christ may rest on me.

(WEB)

Use this verse when you feel you have nothing left to give. Ask God to show that his grace is enough for the exact weakness you are facing right now, not some imagined future one.

Psalm 46:1

God is our refuge and strength, a very present help in trouble.

(WEB)

Read this slowly when fear or pressure is rising. Name the trouble you are facing and ask God to be your refuge in it, speaking the truth of his nearness over the anxious thoughts.

Isaiah 40:29

He gives power to the weak. He increases the strength of him who has no might.

(WEB)

Pray this when your energy is running out before the day is half over. Ask God to give strength to your body and spirit, and to renew you in the places where you feel most drained.

Ephesians 4:29

Let no corrupt speech proceed out of your mouth, but only what is good for building others up as the need may be, that it may give grace to those who hear.

(WEB)

Bring this verse to God when you are about to speak to someone who has frustrated you. Ask him to give you words that build up rather than tear down, and to let your speech carry his grace.

How to Pray This Prayer

Try praying the full prayer in the first ten minutes after you wake, while you are still sitting on the edge of the bed or standing at the kitchen sink with your coffee. Keeping a hand on something steady, like the back of a chair or your Bible resting on the table, can help your attention stay put. If you are not a morning person, pick the moment when your mind is most clear, whether that is lunch break in your car or a quiet walk to the mailbox.

You can also pray this prayer with someone else. A spouse, a roommate or a friend can take turns reading a line each, or one person can pray it over the other before they part ways. Praying for daily grace together reminds both of you that you are not carrying the day alone, and it often makes the rest of the morning feel lighter.

A Blessing to Close

May the Lord go before you into this day and walk beside you through every hour. May his grace be sufficient for each task, his peace steady your heart, and his kindness flow through you to those around you.
