This is a short prayer for your pastor, written for the moments when you want to lift up the person who leads, teaches and carries your church without knowing exactly what to say. You can pray it on Sunday morning before the service, during the week when you think of them, or whenever their name comes to mind. Read it aloud as written, or use it as a starting point and speak what is on your heart in your own words.

Short Prayer for My Pastor

Lord, thank you for giving our church a shepherd who loves you and wants to serve your people. Be near to my pastor this week. Give them wisdom when they prepare to preach, and let your truth come clearly from their lips. Guard their time with family, and help them rest when they are tired. Where they feel stretched thin or unseen, remind them that you see every hour they give and every burden they carry.

Strengthen their faith when doubts or discouragement arrive. Protect their marriage, their children and their health. Give them friends who will pray for them honestly and encourage them without flattery. When they sit with a family in grief or stand beside someone in crisis, give them calm words and a steady presence. Let them never forget that they are loved by you and not only needed by others. Amen.

A Shorter Version to Pray in a Moment

Father, bless my pastor today. Give them wisdom for every decision and patience for every interruption. Fill them with your peace and let them feel your nearness. Protect them from weariness and from the discouragement that comes with ministry. Use their life to draw people closer to you, and remind them how deeply you love them. Amen.

Scriptures to Pray Alongside

Ephesians 6:19

On my behalf, that utterance may be given to me in opening my mouth, to make known with boldness the mystery of the Good News…

(WEB)

Paul asked the church to pray that words would be given to him when he spoke. Ask God to give your pastor clear and courageous words each time they open Scripture to the congregation.

Philippians 1:3-4

3 I thank my God whenever I remember you, 4 always in every request of mine on behalf of you all, making my requests with joy…

(WEB)

Paul thanked God for his partners in the gospel and prayed for them with joy. Give thanks for your pastor’s faithfulness, and pray for them with the same gladness.

Hebrews 13:17

Obey your leaders and submit to them, for they watch on behalf of your souls, as those who will give account, that they may do this with joy, and not with groaning, for that would be unprofitable for you.

(WEB)

This verse speaks of leaders who keep watch over souls and will give an account. Pray that your pastor will serve with joy rather than burden, and that the church will support them well.

1 Thessalonians 5:25

Brothers, pray for us.

(WEB)

Paul simply asked the believers to pray for him. Follow that example by asking God to hold your pastor close and to answer prayers on their behalf.

Psalm 23:1-3

1 The LORD is my shepherd: I shall lack nothing. 2 He makes me lie down in green pastures. He leads me beside still waters. 3 He restores my soul. He guides me in the paths of righteousness for his name’s sake.

(WEB)

The Lord who is our shepherd leads and restores his people. Ask him to restore your pastor’s soul, refresh their spirit, and lead them along paths of rest and righteousness.

How to Pray This Prayer

Many people find it helpful to pray for their pastor early in the day, before the phone starts ringing and the to-do list takes over. Keep a copy of this prayer in your Bible or on your phone, and read it once while you sit with a cup of coffee. If you have a few minutes before worship, bow your head in your pew and pray the shorter version quietly while the music plays.

Invite others to pray with you. Share the prayer with a small group, a prayer chain or your spouse, and ask them to pray for your pastor’s family as well. Consider writing a short note to your pastor letting them know you have prayed for them this week. Your encouragement and your prayers can work together to help them keep going.

A Blessing to Close

May the Lord bless your pastor and keep them. May he make his face shine upon them and give them peace in every season. May their family feel the warmth of God’s love, and may the people they serve be strengthened by their faithful care. Go in peace, knowing that the one who calls your pastor is faithful to finish what he has begun.
