This short prayer is for anyone who wants to serve others with a willing heart, whether at home, at church, at work, or in a neighbor’s time of need. Pray it when you are about to step into a task that asks more of you than you feel you have to give, or at the start of a day when you know many people will need something from you. You can read it aloud exactly as written, or use it as a starting point and speak your own words in the same spirit.

Short Prayer for Serving Others

Lord, you served us first, and you still give yourself to people who never deserved it. Teach me to see the people in front of me the way you see them. Some of them are tired, some are grieving, and some are simply waiting for someone to notice. Help me notice. When I am tempted to count what my help costs me, remind me that every good thing I give comes from what you have already given me. Keep my motives clean, so that I do not serve to be praised or to feel important, but because I love the people you have placed in my path.

Give me patience for the interruptions, because those are often where the real work happens. Give me wisdom to know when to speak and when to simply sit quietly beside someone. Give me strength for the tasks no one sees, the dishes, the phone calls, the small errands that add up to a life of care. And when I fail, as I will, let me come back to you quickly, ask forgiveness, and try again with a softer heart. Use my hands, my time, and my words for your purposes today. Amen.

A Shorter Version to Pray in a Moment

Lord, I am about to help someone, and I am already feeling stretched thin. Open my eyes to the person who needs me right now. Quiet my hurry and fill me with your kindness. Let my help be honest and unhurried, and let it point them toward you more than toward me. Thank you for serving me first. Amen.

Scriptures to Pray Alongside

Galatians 5:13

For you, brothers, were called for freedom. Only don’t use your freedom for gain to the flesh, but through love be servants to one another.

(WEB)

Pray this verse as a reminder that freedom in Christ is not permission to please yourself. Ask God to turn your freedom into quiet, practical love for the people you meet today.

Matthew 20:28

Even as the Son of Man came not to be served, but to serve, and to give his life as a ransom for many.”

(WEB)

Pray this verse by remembering that Jesus himself came to serve rather than be served. Ask him to shape your own desire to help after the pattern he set.

Philippians 2:3-4

3 Doing nothing through rivalry or through conceit, but in humility, each counting others better than himself; 4 each of you not just looking to his own things, but each of you also to the things of others.

(WEB)

Pray these verses when you feel tempted to protect your own interests first. Ask God to help you look beyond your own needs and notice what others around you need.

1 Peter 4:10

As each has received a gift, employ it in serving one another, as good managers of the grace of God in its various forms.

(WEB)

Pray this verse by thanking God for the particular gifts he has given you. Ask him to show you how to use them to bless others, not to impress them.

Micah 6:8

He has shown you, O man, what is good. What does the LORD require of you, but to act justly, to love mercy, and to walk humbly with your God?

(WEB)

Pray this verse as a simple summary of what God asks of you in service. Ask him to make you faithful in justice, kindness, and humble walking with him.

How to Pray This Prayer

Many people find it helpful to pray this prayer first thing in the morning, before the phone and the to-do list take over. If you are caring for children, an aging parent, or a spouse who is struggling, you might say it in the kitchen while the coffee brews or in the car before you walk through the door. Keep a folded copy in your bag or on the refrigerator so you can find it on a hard day.

You can also pray it with someone else. A friend, a small group, or your family can take turns reading a line each, which turns the prayer into a shared commitment to serve together. Afterward, consider writing down one specific person or task that came to mind while you prayed, and then go do it. Prayer and action work best when they stay close together.

A Blessing to Close

May the Lord who served us first give you eyes to see the needs around you and a heart that does not grow weary in doing good. May he strengthen your hands for the hidden tasks and fill your words with grace. May your service rise from his love and return to him as an offering that pleases him. Go in peace.
