This prayer is for the moments when worry has taken hold of your thoughts and will not let go. It can be prayed in the early morning before the day’s demands arrive, late at night when sleep feels far away, or in the middle of a tense afternoon. You can read it aloud exactly as written, or use it as a starting point and speak your own worries in the same spirit.

Christian Prayer for Overcoming Worry

Father, I come to you with a mind that keeps running ahead of me. I worry about the bills that do not quite balance, the phone call I am dreading, the results I am waiting for, and the people I love who are struggling in ways I cannot fix. Some nights I lie awake replaying conversations and rehearsing disasters that have not happened. Lord, you know every one of these fears by name, and you have not been surprised by any of them.

Help me set down what is not mine to carry. Quiet the voice that insists everything depends on me getting it exactly right. Teach me to bring each concern to you as it comes, instead of gathering them into a heavy pile that crushes my chest. Where I need wisdom, give it. Where I need courage, strengthen me. Where I can do nothing at all, let me rest in the fact that you are already at work. Thank you for listening to me without impatience. Amen.

A Shorter Version to Pray in a Moment

Lord, my thoughts are racing and I feel the knot tightening in my chest. I hand you this worry right now, and the next one after it. Steady my breathing and steady my heart. Remind me that you are near and that you care for me. Help me take the next small step in front of me and leave the rest in your hands. Amen.

Scriptures to Pray Alongside

Philippians 4:6-7

6 In nothing be anxious, but in everything, by prayer and petition with thanksgiving, let your requests be made known to God. 7 And the peace of God, which surpasses all understanding, will guard your hearts and your thoughts in Christ Jesus.

(WEB)

Paul names anxiety directly and then points to prayer with thanksgiving as the way to bring it to God. Pray these words slowly, turning each worry into a request you place in God’s hands.

1 Peter 5:7

Casting all your worries on him, because he cares for you.

(WEB)

Peter invites you to hand over every anxiety rather than carry it alone. Speak the words as an invitation, naming the specific cares you are ready to release.

Psalm 55:22

Cast your burden on the LORD, and he will sustain you. He will never allow the righteous to be moved.

(WEB)

This verse pictures a burden being set down on someone stronger. Pray it by imagining the weight you are holding and deliberately placing it on the Lord.

Matthew 6:34

Therefore don’t be anxious for tomorrow, for tomorrow will be anxious for itself. Each day’s own evil is sufficient.

(WEB)

Jesus addresses worry about tomorrow and reminds you that each day has enough trouble of its own. Use this verse to ask for grace for today alone.

Isaiah 26:3

You will keep whoever’s mind is steadfast in perfect peace, because he trusts in you.

(WEB)

The prophet speaks of peace kept for the mind that stays fixed on God. Pray it by asking the Lord to draw your attention back to him whenever it wanders.

How to Pray This Prayer

Choose a fixed time for it, such as when you first wake or just before you settle in for the night. Sit in a chair where your feet touch the floor and keep a pen and paper nearby. As you pray, write down any specific worry that surfaces, then read the line aloud and add, “I give this to you.” Doing this with your hands keeps your mind from drifting back into rehearsing the same fears.

If you are struggling with worry that feels too heavy to face alone, ask a trusted friend, pastor or family member to pray this prayer with you or for you. Hearing another voice speak these words can loosen worry’s grip in a way that silent prayer sometimes cannot. Let them know which concerns are the hardest, so they can keep you in mind over the coming days.

A Blessing to Close

May the Lord who holds every anxious thought steady your heart and quiet your mind. May his peace guard what you cannot control and make room for rest. May you walk through this day one step at a time, knowing you are watched over with care.
