If you are a new father, or you love one, this page offers short prayers you can pray in the first weeks and months after a child arrives. Read the main prayer aloud as written, or use it as a starting point and speak your own words in the same spirit.
Short Prayers for New Fathers
Father, I am holding a child I did not know a few days ago, and my hands do not yet know how to be steady. Some nights I lie awake listening for breathing that I cannot hear over my own pulse. Some mornings I feel I am failing at something everyone else seems to do without thinking. Be near me in the small hours. Give me the patience to learn this one feeding, this one diaper, this one cry at a time.
Lord, I am also tired in ways I did not expect. My sleep is broken, my work is waiting, and my wife or partner needs me in ways I am still learning to name. Show me where to step in and where to step back. Help me to be present rather than only busy, and to speak kindly when I am worn thin. Where I feel afraid of getting it wrong, remind me that you have already given me this child and that you will go on giving me what I need.
Thank you for this new life and for the chance to be a father. Keep my child safe in my arms and in your care. Teach me to trust you more than my own strength, and let my love grow alongside this little one. Amen.
A Shorter Version to Pray in a Moment
Lord, I am tired and I am scared I am not enough for this child. Steady my hands and quiet my mind for this moment. Help me to be present with my baby and with the people who love us both. Give me just enough strength for the next hour, and trust you for the rest. Amen.
Scriptures to Pray Alongside
Psalm 127:3
Behold, children are a heritage of the LORD. The fruit of the womb is his reward.
(WEB)
Read this slowly as you hold your child. It reminds you that the child is a gift from the Lord, not a task you must accomplish alone, and it lets gratitude come up alongside the exhaustion.
Isaiah 40:11
He will feed his flock like a shepherd. He will gather the lambs in his arm, and carry them in his bosom. He will gently lead those who have their young.
(WEB)
Picture God gathering the lambs close to his chest. Pray that he would gently carry you and your child through the tender early days, and that he would lead the two of you where you need to go.
Psalm 121:3-4
3 He will not allow your foot to be moved. He who keeps you will not slumber. 4 Behold, he who keeps Israel will neither slumber nor sleep.
(WEB)
When you cannot sleep, pray these words over the house. Ask the one who does not slumber to keep watch while you rest as you can, and to keep your family safe through the night.
Matthew 11:28
“Come to me, all you who labor and are heavily burdened, and I will give you rest.
(WEB)
Bring your weariness to Jesus in plain words. Name the specific burdens of this season, the money, the sleep, the fear, and ask him to give you the rest that only he can give.
James 1:5
But if any of you lacks wisdom, let him ask of God, who gives to all liberally and without reproach; and it will be given to him.
(WEB)
Many new fathers feel they are guessing at every step. Pray this verse each morning, asking God to give you wisdom for the decisions in front of you, and trusting that he gives generously.
How to Pray This Prayer
Many fathers find the quiet of early morning or the moment after the last feed of the night the best time to pray. Sit in the rocking chair or on the edge of the bed with your child against your shoulder, and read the prayer slowly. Keeping one hand on your baby while you pray can make the words feel more grounded and close.
You can also invite your partner, a close friend or a grandparent to pray this prayer with you, taking turns reading a paragraph each. Some fathers keep a card with the shorter version in a pocket or on the fridge, so they can pray it during a diaper change or while waiting for a kettle to boil. Praying together can also ease the sense that you are carrying all of this alone.
A Blessing to Close
May the Lord bless you and keep you in these early days. May he give you rest when you are weary, patience when you are tired, and joy in the small moments that no one else sees. May your child grow strong in the shelter of a loving home, and may you know that you are not walking this road alone.
