This page offers short prayers for police officers, written for the people who wear the badge and for the families who wait at home for them to return safely. Pray these words before a shift, during a hard call, or in the quiet hours after a difficult day. You can read them aloud exactly as written, or use them as a starting point and speak your own words into the same concerns.

Short Prayers for Police Officers

Lord, you see the officers who leave home each day not knowing what the next call will bring. Go before them on the road and in every house, store, and street they enter. Give them clear thinking when everything around them is loud and fast, and steady hands when fear would make them shake. Let them see people as you see them, including those who are frightened, angry, or in pain. Guard their bodies on the street and their hearts in the long hours of the night.

Be near to them when a decision must be made in a single second. Give them wisdom to know when to speak, when to wait, and when to step back. Protect the officers they work beside, and let them trust one another with their lives. When they carry the weight of what they have seen, meet them there and lighten the load. Help them rest when they come off duty, and give their families peace while they are gone. We ask this in the name of Jesus. Amen.

A Shorter Version to Pray in a Moment

Father, keep the officers on duty right now safe and clear-minded. Give them calm in the middle of chaos and courage to do what is right. Bring every one of them home tonight, and give their families rest until they arrive. Thank you that you are with them even when no one else is. Amen.

Scriptures to Pray Alongside

Psalm 121:7-8

7 The LORD will keep you from all evil. He will keep your soul. 8 The LORD will keep your going out and your coming in, from this time forward, and forever more.

(WEB)

Pray these verses over the officers as they go out and as they come back in. Ask the Lord to keep their going and coming, from this time forward and forevermore, as they walk into places most people never see.

Proverbs 3:5-6

5 Trust in the LORD with all your heart, and don’t lean on your own understanding. 6 In all your ways acknowledge him, and he will make your paths straight.

(WEB)

When an officer faces a decision with no clear answer, pray this passage for them. Ask God to direct their steps when their own understanding feels too thin to trust.

Isaiah 41:10

Don’t you be afraid, for I am with you. Don’t be dismayed, for I am your God. I will strengthen you. Yes, I will help you. Yes, I will uphold you with the right hand of my righteousness.

(WEB)

Use this verse for officers who are afraid, whether before a dangerous call or after one. Pray that they would know God is present with them and strengthening them in the moment they need it most.

Romans 12:18

If it is possible, as much as it is up to you, be at peace with all men.

(WEB)

Pray this for the officers who must keep the peace in tense situations. Ask that, as far as it depends on them, they would be able to live at peace with the people in front of them, even when others are hostile.

Philippians 4:6-7

6 In nothing be anxious, but in everything, by prayer and petition with thanksgiving, let your requests be made known to God. 7 And the peace of God, which surpasses all understanding, will guard your hearts and your thoughts in Christ Jesus.

(WEB)

This passage speaks to anxiety that builds over long shifts and unresolved cases. Pray that officers would bring each worry to God and receive a peace that guards their minds through the hardest hours.

How to Pray This Prayer

Many people pray for officers at the start of a shift, while coffee is still hot and the day has not yet turned hard. You might also pray in the car on the way to a precinct or station, or at home while the kettle boils. If you keep a hand on a steering wheel, a rosary, or a photo of someone you love in uniform, let that object remind you to pray each time you touch it.

This prayer can be shared too. A spouse, parent, or friend of an officer can read it together at the kitchen table before the night begins. Church groups, small groups, and prayer partners often take turns praying for local officers and their families, so one person does not carry the whole burden. Speak the names of the officers you know when you pray, because God knows each of them personally.

A Blessing to Close

May the Lord go before every officer who serves tonight and stand beside them in every hard moment. May he cover their families with peace, and bring each one safely home to rest.
