This page offers a short prayer for travelers, written for the moments just before you leave, while you wait at the gate or merge onto the highway, or when you arrive somewhere unfamiliar. Pray it before a flight, a road trip, a long train ride, or a move to a new city. You can read it aloud exactly as written, or use it as a starting point and speak the words that come to your own heart.

Short Prayers for Travelers

Lord, thank you that you are already in the place I am going and already at the place I have left. Go before me on this road, this runway, this unfamiliar street. Keep the car, the plane, the train, and the hands on the wheel steady. Give the driver beside me patience, and give me alertness without anxiety. When I feel the knot in my stomach about delays, missed connections, or strange noises in the engine, remind me that you hold the schedule and the miles in your hands.

Protect the people I love while I am away, especially those who will be waiting for news that I have landed safely. Keep my family at home in your care, and keep my own body rested, fed, and free from sickness. Help me to be kind to strangers in lines and seats next to me, and wise with money, directions, and decisions in places I do not know well. Whatever happens on this trip, let me sense your nearness and not only my fear. Bring me home again in your good time. Amen.

A Shorter Version to Pray in a Moment

Father, you are with me in the air, on the road, and on the water. Hold the wheel, the engine, and the sky above us. Calm my heart, guard the people I love at home, and help me to trust you with every mile. Bring me safely to where I am going and safely back again. Amen.

Scriptures to Pray Alongside

Psalm 121:8

The LORD will keep your going out and your coming in, from this time forward, and forever more.

(WEB)

This verse covers both your going out and your coming in, which makes it a good companion for any trip. Pray it when you lock the front door, and again when you carry your bags through the arrival gate. It reminds you that the Lord watches over the whole journey, not just the start.

Psalm 91:11

For he will put his angels in charge of you, to guard you in all your ways.

(WEB)

Read this slowly as you buckle your seatbelt or step onto a train platform. Ask God to send his angels to guard you on the roads and paths you will take. Let the image of protection settle your nerves when the traffic gets heavy or the flight feels bumpy.

Isaiah 43:2

When you pass through the waters, I will be with you; and through the rivers, they will not overflow you. When you walk through the fire, you will not be burned, and flame will not scorch you.

(WEB)

This verse speaks to the rivers and fires of life, which travelers can feel in very real ways. Pray it when you face a rough crossing, a stressful detour, or a hard conversation far from home. It reminds you that God’s presence stays with you through every difficult stretch.

Proverbs 3:5-6

5 Trust in the LORD with all your heart, and don’t lean on your own understanding. 6 In all your ways acknowledge him, and he will make your paths straight.

(WEB)

When you are unsure of the route, the schedule, or the right choice in a foreign place, pray this passage over your plans. Ask God to make your paths straight, so that you can rely on his direction rather than only on your own guesses. Let it shape how you make decisions along the way.

Psalm 139:9-10

9 If I take the wings of the dawn, and settle in the uttermost parts of the sea; 10 Even there your hand will lead me, and your right hand will hold me.

(WEB)

This psalm speaks of going to the farthest places and still finding God there. Pray it when you feel far from home, lonely in a hotel room, or unsure of where you belong. It assures you that no distance on the map is too great for his hand to reach you.

How to Pray This Prayer

Pray the longer version while you sit in your seat before the engine starts or the train pulls out, and keep your hands still in your lap or resting on your bag. If you are the one driving, pray the shorter version with your hands on the wheel, breathing slowly between phrases. You might also pray it aloud with a travel companion, letting them add their own requests for the trip.

If you are sending someone else off, read the prayer over them before they leave, changing “me” to “them” where it fits. Keep a copy of the words in your phone so you can return to them when worry rises at a gate, in a taxi, or late at night in an unfamiliar bed. Let these simple words carry you through the hours between departure and arrival.

A Blessing to Close

May the Lord go before you on every road and stay beside you in every sky. May he keep your going out and your coming in, and give you peace in the places you have never seen. May the people waiting for you at home rest in the same faithful care. Go in his name, and come back in his peace.
