This simple prayer is for those traveling, whether you are heading out on a long drive, boarding a flight, or setting off on a trip that has you a little anxious. Pray it before you leave home, in the car before the engine starts, or in the terminal while you wait. You can read it aloud exactly as written, or use it as a starting point and speak your own words in the spaces it leaves open.

Simple Prayer for Those Traveling

Lord, thank you for going before us on every road, every runway and every mile between here and where we are going. You know the route we will take, the traffic we will meet, and the weather waiting on the way. Please keep us alert and calm behind the wheel or in the seat beside a stranger. Guard our bodies from illness and accident, and give us patience with delays, missed connections and the small frustrations that come with moving from one place to another.

We also ask for those we love who are staying behind. Keep them safe while we are away, and give them peace while they wait to hear that we have arrived. Watch over the people we will see on the trip, the ones we are going to visit, and the strangers who share our journey for a few hours. Let our time away be good for our hearts, and help us bring back whatever you want us to learn or enjoy along the way. Thank you that we are never beyond your care, wherever we are. Amen.

A Shorter Version to Pray in a Moment

Father, go with us today. Keep us safe on the road or in the air, and steady our hearts when we feel rushed or afraid. Watch over the people we love at home and the people we will meet along the way. Bring us there and back again in your care, and help us trust you every mile of the way. Amen.

Scriptures to Pray Alongside

Psalm 121:8

The LORD will keep your going out and your coming in, from this time forward, and forever more.

(WEB)

This verse promises that the Lord watches over our going out and our coming in. Pray it when you leave the house or hotel, asking God to guard every step of the trip and every return home.

Psalm 91:11

For he will put his angels in charge of you, to guard you in all your ways.

(WEB)

Here the psalmist speaks of God giving his angels charge over his people. Pray this verse for the drivers, pilots and fellow travelers around you, trusting God’s protection to reach them too.

Proverbs 3:5-6

5 Trust in the LORD with all your heart, and don’t lean on your own understanding. 6 In all your ways acknowledge him, and he will make your paths straight.

(WEB)

When plans shift and routes change, this passage calls us to trust the Lord instead of leaning on our own understanding. Use it to surrender the details you cannot control and ask God to make your path straight.

Isaiah 41:10

Don’t you be afraid, for I am with you. Don’t be dismayed, for I am your God. I will strengthen you. Yes, I will help you. Yes, I will uphold you with the right hand of my righteousness.

(WEB)

God speaks to his people with words of reassurance and strength. Pray this verse when you feel unsettled in an unfamiliar place, reminding yourself that God is with you in every new setting.

Psalm 107:30

Then they are glad because it is calm, so he brings them to their desired haven.

(WEB)

This verse describes the relief of sailors who reach the harbor they longed for. Pray it with gratitude as you arrive, thanking God for bringing you safely to the place you were heading.

How to Pray This Prayer

Pray this prayer before you turn the key, close the front door, or board the plane, while your bags are still within reach and your mind is clear. If you are the driver or pilot, you might pray it with your hands resting on the wheel or the controls, letting the words slow you down before the journey begins. Keep a copy on your phone or a note card in your bag so you can read it again during a delay or a long stretch of highway.

Invite someone else to pray it with you, whether that is a spouse, a child, a friend who has come to see you off, or a group of believers gathered before a church trip. Hearing another voice speak the same words can turn a worried moment into a shared trust. When you return home, pray the blessing again over the people who welcomed you back, and thank God together for the safe journey.

A Blessing to Close

May the Lord go before you and beside you on every mile of the road. May he keep your steps steady, your heart at rest, and your loved ones close in thought until you return. Wherever you are headed, may you know that you travel under the faithful care of God.
