This morning prayer is for anyone who wakes up wanting to trust God more and needing strength for the day ahead. Pray it first thing, before the phone, the coffee or the first message, while the house is still quiet. You can read it aloud exactly as written, or use it as a starting point and put your own words in where your heart needs them.
Morning Prayer for Faith and Strength
Lord, I come to you before anything else this morning. Yesterday is behind me, and I can already feel the list of today pressing in: the meeting that might go badly, the conversation I have been dreading, the people who will need something from me before I have had time to catch my breath. Before I pick up any of it, I want to put it down in your hands. Help me remember that you were awake long before I was, and that nothing in this day has caught you by surprise.
Give me faith that is steady, not just a feeling I hope to have later in the afternoon. When I doubt whether you are near, remind me of what you have already done. When I am tempted to measure my worth by how well the day goes, quiet that voice and remind me who I belong to. Strengthen my hands for the work in front of me, my patience with the people I love, and my honesty when I am tired or afraid. Let me be a little more patient than I feel like being and a little more kind than I think I can manage on my own.
Be with the people I will meet today, the ones I know well and the ones I will only pass in passing. Go before me into every decision and stay with me in every hard moment. If I fail you before lunch, let me come back to you before dinner without shame. I want to walk through this day trusting you, not just getting through it. Hold me close, and let my first steps be steps of faith. Amen.
A Shorter Version to Pray in a Moment
Lord, I need you this morning. Give me faith for what I cannot see yet and strength for what is already in front of me. Steady my heart when my thoughts run ahead of me, and help me stay close to you through every task and conversation. Be my courage, my calm and my rest, and let my day begin in your presence. Amen.
Scriptures to Pray Alongside
Psalm 46:1
God is our refuge and strength, a very present help in trouble.
(WEB)
Read this slowly when the day feels bigger than you are. Pray that God would be your refuge this morning, and ask him to help you run to him before you run to worry.
Isaiah 40:31
But those who wait for the LORD will renew their strength. They will mount up with wings like eagles. They will run, and not be weary. They will walk, and not faint.
(WEB)
Pray this for the tiredness you already feel before the day has started. Ask God to renew your strength in the places where you feel most depleted, especially in the hours when you are tempted to give up.
Philippians 4:13
I can do all things through Christ, who strengthens me.
(WEB)
Use this verse when you face a specific task you are not sure you can handle. Pray that Christ would be the source of your ability, not your own willpower alone.
Lamentations 3:22-23
22 It is because of the LORD’s loving kindnesses that we are not consumed, because his compassion doesn’t fail. 23 They are new every morning. Great is your faithfulness.
(WEB)
Pray this when yesterday went poorly and you are not sure today will be different. Thank God that his faithfulness is new each morning, and ask him to help you receive it as your own.
Joshua 1:9
Haven’t I commanded you? Be strong and courageous. Don’t be afraid. Don’t be dismayed, for the LORD your God is with you wherever you go.”
(WEB)
Speak this over yourself before you leave the house. Ask God to make you strong and courageous in the places where fear is loudest, trusting that he goes with you wherever you go.
How to Pray This Prayer
Try to pray this prayer before you check your phone or step into the day’s noise, even if it is only for two minutes. Sit somewhere you can be still, perhaps at the kitchen table with a cup of coffee, or on the edge of the bed before your feet hit the floor. If you like, rest one hand open on your lap or hold a small object that reminds you of God’s care, so that your body joins in the prayer along with your thoughts.
You might also pray this prayer with someone else, a spouse, a roommate or a friend who is going through a hard season. Read it together over a phone call or in person, and take turns adding one thing you need strength for that day. Praying a morning prayer alongside another person often makes it easier to carry the day with faith, because you know someone else is asking God for the same things on your behalf.
A Blessing to Close
May the Lord go before you and be your steady ground today. May he give faith to your heart when doubts rise, strength to your hands for every task, and peace to the people you will meet. May his faithfulness meet you in the morning and stay with you until evening.
