This lesson teaches children that God’s word grows in hearts that listen and keep it, and that God’s kingdom is worth more than anything else. It works well for children ages 5 to 11 and takes about 20 to 30 minutes, with a short story, a few Bible verses, and a simple activity.

Big Idea

God’s word is like good seed. When we listen carefully and keep it in our hearts, it grows and makes good fruit in our lives, and it is worth more than anything else we could have.

Memory Verse

Matthew 13:9

He who has ears to hear, let him hear.”

Cup both hands behind your ears, then open them wide as you say the verse together. Ask the children to show you with their own hands how they will listen today.

The Story: Matthew 13 for Kids

One day Jesus sat by the sea, and a huge crowd gathered on the shore to hear him. Jesus got into a boat so everyone could see and hear him. Then he began to tell them stories called parables, which are short stories that teach a big truth.

In the first story, a farmer went out to plant seeds. Some seeds fell on the path, and birds came and ate them up. Some seeds fell on rocky ground where there was little dirt, so they sprang up fast but withered in the hot sun because they had no roots. Some seeds fell among thorny weeds, and the thorns choked them out. But some seeds fell on good soil, and they grew into plants that made a great harvest.

Later, Jesus’s friends asked him why he used stories. Jesus explained that the seed is God’s word. The hard path, the rocky ground, and the thorny ground stand for hearts that do not keep God’s word. The good soil stands for a heart that hears the word, understands it, and grows strong in it.

Jesus told more stories too. He said the kingdom of heaven is like a tiny mustard seed that grows into a big tree where birds can rest. He said it is like yeast that a woman mixed into dough, and it spread through all of it. Then he said the kingdom is like a treasure hidden in a field. A man found it, was so happy, and sold everything he had so he could buy that field.

Jesus finished by telling the disciples that the kingdom is like a fine pearl. A merchant found one pearl of great value, sold everything he owned, and bought it. Jesus asked his friends if they understood. They said, “Yes, Lord.” Then Jesus told them that God’s kingdom is precious enough to give everything for.

Read It Together

Matthew 13:3-8

3 He spoke to them many things in parables, saying, “Behold, a farmer went out to sow. 4 As he sowed, some seeds fell by the roadside, and the birds came and devoured them. 5 Others fell on rocky ground, where they didn’t have much soil, and immediately they sprang up, because they had no depth of earth. 6 When the sun had risen, they were scorched. Because they had no root, they withered away. 7 Others fell among thorns. The thorns grew up and choked them. 8 Others fell on good soil, and yielded fruit: some one hundred times as much, some sixty, and some thirty.

Point out the four kinds of ground and ask the children to find the good soil. Explain that the farmer kept planting even though some seeds did not grow, just as God keeps sharing his word with everyone.

Matthew 13:23

What was sown on the good ground, this is he who hears the word, and understands it, who most certainly bears fruit, and produces, some one hundred times as much, some sixty, and some thirty.”

(WEB)

Show the children that Jesus says the good soil is the person who hears the word and understands it. Remind them that understanding comes from asking questions, reading the Bible, and listening to God.

Matthew 13:44

“Again, the Kingdom of Heaven is like treasure hidden in the field, which a man found, and hid. In his joy, he goes and sells all that he has, and buys that field.

Talk about the man who was so glad to find the treasure that he sold everything to get it. Help the children see that God’s kingdom is the greatest treasure, and it brings real joy.

Talk About It

  • What kind of ground do you think your heart is most like, and how can you help it grow good fruit?
  • What did the birds, the thorns, and the sun do to the seeds that fell in the wrong places?
  • Why do you think Jesus told stories instead of just saying everything plainly?
  • What is something you would be happy to give up so you could have something even better?
  • How can you listen to God’s word this week so it can grow in your heart?

Activity Ideas

Paper Plate Seed Garden

You will need paper plates, markers, glue, cotton balls, and small scraps of green construction paper. Have each child draw four sections on a plate, one for each kind of ground from the story. Let them glue cotton balls for birds, paper thorns, and green sprouts to show which parts are good soil. Ask them to explain each part of their picture to you.

Good Soil Musical Freeze

Play some music while the children walk around the room like seeds blowing in the wind. When the music stops, they freeze and show a shape for one of the four kinds of ground. Then talk about how they can be good soil by listening well. Keep the game short so the children stay engaged.

Treasure Hunt Take-Home

Hide a few small coins or stickers in a bowl of rice or dry beans and send the bowl home with the children. Ask them to find the treasure with their hands, then to tell their family the story of the hidden treasure. Encourage them to read or tell one Bible story at home this week.

Teacher Notes

For adults, this chapter shows that God’s word has power to change lives, but it requires a receptive heart. The parables reveal that God’s kingdom grows quietly and sometimes starts very small, yet it is worth more than anything we could possess. Jesus also explains that some hearts resist his word because of distractions, hardship, or stubbornness, which should move us to examine our own response to Scripture.

Avoid suggesting to children that they can earn God’s love by being good soil. Make clear that God’s grace is what makes growth possible, and that his word is a gift he gives freely to everyone who listens.

A Prayer to Close

Lord Jesus, thank you for your word, which is like good seed. Help us to listen carefully, to understand what you say, and to keep your word in our hearts. Make us good soil that grows fruit for you. Thank you for loving us. Amen.
