A morning prayer for a teachable spirit asks God to make your heart open, humble and willing to learn before the day’s first decisions are made. Pray it when you wake up, while the coffee is brewing or before you check your phone, so that the first thing you give the day is a willingness to be taught. You can read it aloud exactly as written, or use it as a starting point and put your own words to the people and tasks waiting for you.

Morning Prayer for a Teachable Spirit

Lord, I come to you before the noise of this day starts. You know what is ahead of me: the conversations I will have, the work waiting on my desk, the people who will ask my opinion and the ones who will disagree with me. Give me ears that listen before they answer. Keep me from assuming I already know everything I need to know about my job, my family or my own heart. When a coworker points out a mistake, let me hear it as a gift and not as an attack. When my child, my spouse or a friend tells me I have hurt them, help me to say, “Tell me more,” instead of reaching for my defenses.

Father, I confess that pride tends to rise faster than curiosity in me. I want to be right, to look capable and to avoid the discomfort of being corrected. Soften that part of me this morning. Make me slow to speak and quick to learn. Show me one thing today that I can learn from someone I might otherwise overlook, and give me the humility to receive it. Let my first thought of the day be that you are the Teacher, and I am still growing. Shape my mind and my habits as I go about the next hours, so that I am a person who keeps learning as long as I live.

Thank you that you are patient with me, and that your instruction is always for my good. Go before me into this day, and let me walk in it with an open hand and an open heart. Amen.

A Shorter Version to Pray in a Moment

Lord, make me teachable this morning. Quiet my need to be right, open my ears to the people around me, and help me receive correction with grace. Teach me what you want me to learn today, and keep me willing to change. Amen.

Scriptures to Pray Alongside

Proverbs 9:9

Instruct a wise man, and he will be still wiser. Teach a righteous man, and he will increase in learning.

(WEB)

Pray this verse when you feel defensive about a fact or a request you did not expect. Ask God to make you the kind of person who grows wiser when someone speaks truth to you, not one who grows stubborn.

James 1:19

So, then, my beloved brothers, let every man be swift to hear, slow to speak, and slow to anger…

(WEB)

Read this slowly as you start your day and ask God to help you listen more than you speak. Pray that your reactions in meetings, at the dinner table and in traffic would be slower and kinder.

Psalm 25:4-5

4 Show me your ways, the LORD. Teach me your paths. 5 Guide me in your truth, and teach me, For you are the God of my salvation, I wait for you all day long.

(WEB)

Use this psalm to ask God directly to show you his ways and teach you his paths. Turn the words into a request for guidance over the specific decisions you will make before the day ends.

Proverbs 12:1

Whoever loves correction loves knowledge, but he who hates reproof is stupid.

(WEB)

Let this verse remind you that loving instruction is tied to growing in knowledge. Pray that you would welcome discipline and correction as signs of care, and that you would not avoid them.

Psalm 143:10

Teach me to do your will, for you are my God. Your Spirit is good. Lead me in the land of uprightness.

(WEB)

Pray this as a short request each morning: ask God to teach you to do his will and to lead you on level ground. Let it guide the first honest step you take into your work or your relationships today.

How to Pray This Prayer

Pray this prayer during the first quiet minutes of your day, before you open email, scroll through messages or turn on the news. A kitchen table, a bus seat or a parked car works just as well as a formal prayer corner. If your hands need something to do, hold a cup of tea or a pen and notebook, and jot down one thing you want to learn or one person you want to listen to better that day. Writing it down turns a vague wish into a plan you can actually follow.

If you share a home or work with others, invite a spouse, roommate or friend to pray it with you, or to pray it for you when you are struggling to pray it yourself. Some people find it helpful to pray the shorter version again at midday, when the pressure of the afternoon starts to push them toward defensiveness. You can adjust the words to fit your own circumstances, as long as the heart of the request stays the same.

A Blessing to Close

May the Lord who teaches his people be near to you today. May he give you ears to hear, a patient spirit and the grace to learn from whoever he places in your path. May your heart stay soft, your mind stay open and your day be marked by growth in wisdom and love.
