This morning prayer is written for bereaved parents, the mothers and fathers who wake each day carrying a child they can no longer hold. You can pray it as written, read it aloud before you get out of bed or over your first cup of coffee, or use it as a starting point and speak in your own words. Either way, it gives you a way to bring the day to God before the day brings itself to you.

Morning Prayer for Bereaved Parents

Lord, I am awake, and the first thing I feel is the quiet where my child used to be. Some mornings that quiet is so loud I can hardly breathe. Be near me in it. Help me get up without pretending I am fine, and help me take one small step at a time through the hours ahead. Where I will meet the questions of other people, the empty chair at the table, the sound of a phone, the calendar with a name still on it, give me the strength to get through without falling apart in front of people who do not know what to say.

Father, I ask you for specific mercy today. Help me with the little tasks that feel impossible: making breakfast, answering a message, driving to work, sitting in a meeting. Give my spouse, my other children, my parents and my friends the grace to grieve in their own way, and make me patient with them and with myself. When I cannot find words, let my silence be enough for you to understand. I trust that you know my child’s name, that you have not forgotten them, and that you hold my heart even when I cannot hold it steady. Carry me when I cannot walk, and walk beside me when I can. Amen.

A Shorter Version to Pray in a Moment

Lord, it is morning and the ache is here again. I do not know how to face this day, so I give you the first hour and ask you to meet me in it. Hold my child in your care, hold me in your arms, and give me enough strength for the next task in front of me. Keep me steady in the places where my grief catches me off guard. Amen.

Scriptures to Pray Alongside

Psalm 34:18

The LORD is near to those who have a broken heart, and saves those who have a crushed spirit.

(WEB)

Read this slowly and let it remind you that God is close to a broken heart, not far off. Pray it as a plain statement of who God is, especially on the mornings when you feel most alone with your loss.

Psalm 46:1

God is our refuge and strength, a very present help in trouble.

(WEB)

Use this verse to ask for refuge before the day starts. Name the places in your day that feel most unsafe for your heart, and ask God to be your shelter in each of them.

Matthew 11:28

“Come to me, all you who labor and are heavily burdened, and I will give you rest.

(WEB)

Bring your weariness to Jesus as you begin the day. Pray this verse by naming the particular exhaustion you carry, whether it is sleeplessness, tears, or the effort of pretending to be well.

Romans 8:38-39

38 For I am persuaded that neither death, nor life, nor angels, nor principalities, nor things present, nor things to come, nor powers, 39 nor height, nor depth, nor any other created thing, will be able to separate us from God’s love, which is in Christ Jesus our Lord.

(WEB)

This passage speaks of a love that nothing can separate you from, not even death. Pray it over your child’s memory, asking that the love of God would surround them as it surrounds you.

Lamentations 3:22-23

22 It is because of the LORD’s loving kindnesses that we are not consumed, because his compassion doesn’t fail. 23 They are new every morning. Great is your faithfulness.

(WEB)

Even in deep sorrow, this verse points to God’s mercies being new each morning. Pray it as a promise for today, trusting that fresh compassion meets you at the start of each day.

How to Pray This Prayer

Try praying this prayer in the first few minutes after you wake, before the phone and the news and the questions of the day crowd in. A chair by a window, a kitchen table, or a corner of the bedroom can become a quiet place. Keep something in your hands while you pray, such as a cup of tea, a photograph of your child, or a smooth stone, so your body has something steady to hold while your heart speaks.

If you cannot pray aloud, read the words silently or whisper them. You might also ask a trusted friend, a pastor, or your spouse to pray this with you or for you on the days you feel unable to start on your own. Grief is heavy to carry alone, and many bereaved parents find that a shared prayer makes the morning a little lighter.

A Blessing to Close

May the God who sees every tear give you rest for the weight you carry and courage for the hours ahead. May your child be held in a love that never ends, and may you find, in small moments today, the nearness of the One who comforts the brokenhearted.
