This short prayer for a caregiver is written for anyone who spends their days tending to a parent, spouse, child, or friend who cannot fully care for themselves. Pray it at the start of a shift, in the car before walking into the house, or late at night when the day’s needs have finally quieted. You can read it aloud exactly as written, or use it as a starting point and speak your own words where your heart needs to go further.

Short Prayer for a Caregiver

Lord, you see the early mornings and the long nights that no one else sees. You know the medications I have counted, the meals I have coaxed into someone who has no appetite, and the questions I have answered again and again. I am tired, and some days I feel I have nothing left to give. Please meet me in that weariness and remind me that you do not grow tired or weak.

Give me patience for the moments that test it, and gentleness when my own frustration rises. Help me to receive help from others without guilt, and show me where to find rest that is real and not just a pause before the next task. Guard my health, my sleep, and my hope, because I cannot care well for someone else if I neglect the body and soul you gave me.

Be near to the person I love who needs this care. Comfort them in their fear, their pain, and their loss of independence. Let them feel your presence through my hands and my voice, even when I am weary. Thank you for being the faithful caregiver of us both. Amen.

A Shorter Version to Pray in a Moment

Father, I am worn thin right now. Give me strength for the next hour and grace for the next word I speak. Steady my hands, calm my heart, and let your peace settle over this room. Help the one I care for to feel safe and loved. I trust you with what I cannot carry. Amen.

Scriptures to Pray Alongside

He gives power to the weak. He increases the strength of him who has no might.

Galatians 6:9

Let us not be weary in doing good, for we will reap in due season, if we don’t give up.

(WEB)

Pray this verse when the work seems endless and unseen. Ask for perseverance in doing good, trusting that the faithful, daily acts of care are not wasted before God.

Matthew 11:28

“Come to me, all you who labor and are heavily burdened, and I will give you rest.

(WEB)

Pray this verse when exhaustion has settled deep into your body. Bring your weariness to Jesus honestly, and ask him to show you what true rest looks like in your season.

Psalm 46:1

God is our refuge and strength, a very present help in trouble.

2 Corinthians 12:9

He has said to me, “My grace is sufficient for you, for my power is made perfect in weakness.” Most gladly therefore I will rather glory in my weaknesses, that the power of Christ may rest on me.

(WEB)

Pray this verse when you feel you are not enough for the task. Ask God to let his strength be made evident in your limitations, and accept that his grace is sufficient even on your weakest days.

How to Pray This Prayer

Choose a regular moment that fits your routine, such as while the coffee brews, during a short drive between appointments, or just before you close your eyes at night. Keep a copy of the prayer somewhere you will see it, perhaps on the inside of a cabinet door or saved on your phone, so you can find it on the days when your mind is too scattered to remember the words.

Consider praying with your hands busy or resting on something familiar, like the back of the chair where your loved one sits or the edge of the sink. If you have a friend, pastor, or family member who loves you well, invite them to pray this prayer with you or over you. Shared prayer can carry the weight you are not able to hold alone.

A Blessing to Close

May the Lord who sees every quiet act of love strengthen the one who gives this care. May he refresh their body, steady their heart, and remind them that they are not forgotten. May his peace guard them through each long day and bring them rest when the night comes.
