This morning prayer is for the start of a day you are about to live, when your thoughts are still forming and the list of what lies ahead is already pressing in. Pray it when you first wake, while the coffee brews or before your feet hit the floor, and read it aloud as written or use it as a starting point for words of your own.
Morning Prayer for a Good Day
Lord, I am waking to a new day, and I thank you for the gift of it before I have done anything to earn it. You were awake before the sun came up, and you have already gone ahead of me into every hour that is coming. Help me set down the worry I carried to bed and pick up only what you are asking of me today.
Go with me to the kitchen, to the commute, to the meeting I have been dreading and the phone call I keep putting off. Guard my tongue when someone frustrates me, and give me patience with the people who are slow, unkind or simply tired like I am. Show me where a small word of encouragement would matter, and give me the nerve to say it. Let my work be done honestly and with care, even when no one notices.
Be near to the people I love, the ones I will see tonight and the ones I will only think of during the day. Keep them safe, and keep my heart soft toward them when I am busy. If the day brings news I did not want, steady me, and remind me that you have not stopped being good. Thank you in advance for the moments of grace I will not expect. Amen.
A Shorter Version to Pray in a Moment
Father, this is a new day and I did not make it. Walk with me through the hours ahead, the tasks I know and the surprises I do not. Keep my words kind, my hands useful and my heart close to you. Help me to trust you with what I cannot control, and to do the next right thing with the strength you give. Amen.

How to Pray This Prayer
Pray the full prayer while you are still in bed, sitting on the edge of the mattress, or standing at the window with the first light coming in. Hold a cup of something warm in your hands so that your body has a physical reminder of the warmth you are asking God to bring into your day. If you have a list for the day, glance at it once and say the names of the people on it as you pray.
If you share a home, pray it together at the breakfast table or read it aloud to a spouse, child or roommate. Asking someone else to pray the blessing over you at the end of the prayer can also help you begin the day feeling known and supported.
A Blessing to Close
May the Lord go before you into this day and walk beside you through every hour. May he give you patience for the hard moments, joy in the small ones, and a steady heart for whatever comes. May you be a source of grace to someone you meet today.
