This daily prayer is written for a first responder, whether you work as a paramedic, firefighter, police officer, dispatcher, or emergency nurse. Pray it at the start of a shift, in the car on the way to work, or during a quiet minute before you walk out the door. You can read it aloud exactly as written, or use it as a starting point and speak in your own words where your needs are different.
Daily Prayer for a First Responder
Lord, you know what today may ask of me. I do not know which call will come first, what I will see when I arrive, or who will need me in the worst moment of their life. Give me a steady mind when the radio crackles and my pulse jumps. Let my training come to me without hesitation, and let my hands be sure where they need to be. Keep my judgment clear when there is no time to think twice.
I also bring you the weight I carry home. Some scenes stay with me long after I have changed out of my uniform, and I ask you to take those images from me before they settle in my sleep. Watch over the people I will work beside today, and over the families waiting by phones and doorways for news. Where I am tired, renew me. Where I am afraid, be my courage. Where I am proud, soften me so I can ask for help when I need it.
Be near my family while I am gone. Protect the ones I love when they wait up for me, and give them peace that does not depend on my text messages. Bring me home safely tonight, and let me be present for them when I arrive. Amen.
A Shorter Version to Pray in a Moment
Lord, I am heading into a hard day, and I need you now. Steady my hands, sharpen my mind, and keep my heart soft toward the people I serve. Guard my team and my family, and bring us all home tonight. Let me be faithful in what I am called to do, and let me rest in knowing you are with me. Amen.

How to Pray This Prayer
Many first responders find it helpful to pray this prayer in the locker room, in the cab of the truck, or in the car before turning the key. Keep a printed copy in your bag, on the visor, or saved on your phone so it is ready when you need it. If you can, place a hand on the steering wheel, your radio, or your boot as you pray. Touching something tangible can anchor your attention when your thoughts are racing.
This prayer can also be shared. Ask a partner, a chaplain, or a family member to pray it with you or over you before a difficult stretch. Some crews read it together at the start of a shift. Praying alongside someone who knows the work can remind you that you are not carrying the job alone.
A Blessing to Close
May the Lord go before you into every scene and stand with you when the way is unclear. May he steady your hands, guard your heart, and bring you home to the people who love you. May you rest well tonight, knowing that the one who sees every emergency also sees you.
