This short morning prayer is for when a friend is grieving and you want to lift them up before the day begins. Pray it early, while you are still gathering your thoughts, or sit with it over coffee before you text or call them. You can read it aloud exactly as written, or use it as a starting point and put the names, memories and worries of your own friend into your own words.

Short Morning Prayer for a Grieving Friend

Lord, I bring my friend to you this morning. They wake up today carrying a loss that has not gotten any smaller overnight. Some mornings the first thing they feel is the empty space where a person used to be, and then the whole weight of it comes back at once. Be near them in that moment. Let them feel you close before they feel anything else.

Give them strength for the ordinary things they have to do today: the phone calls they dread, the forms and the bills, the meals they may not want to eat, the people who will ask how they are doing. Where they cannot manage much, help them to take one small step and then the next. Remind them that they do not have to hold it all together for anyone. Grant them rest when their body and heart are worn out, and tenderness toward themselves when they cry at strange hours or cannot remember what they meant to do.

Surround them with people who will sit quietly with them, bring food without fuss, and say the name of the one they lost. Protect them from people who rush them or tell them how to feel. And hold me steady too, so that I can show up for them with patience instead of advice. Walk with them through this day, and let them know they are not alone. Amen.

A Shorter Version to Pray in a Moment

Lord, my friend is grieving this morning, and I do not know what to say. Be with them now. Steady their breathing, ease the ache in their chest, and give them enough strength for the next hour. Send the right people to them today, and help me to be the kind of friend who simply stays. Hold them when they cannot hold on. Amen.

Scriptures to Pray Alongside

Psalm 34:18

The LORD is near to those who have a broken heart, and saves those who have a crushed spirit.

(WEB)

Pray this for your friend as a reminder that God does not keep his distance from a broken heart. Ask him to draw near to them this morning, especially in the moments when the loss feels loudest.

Psalm 147:3

He heals the broken in heart, and binds up their wounds.

(WEB)

Use this verse to ask God to tend the wounds your friend is carrying. Pray for healing that comes slowly, one day and one tender moment at a time.

Matthew 11:28

“Come to me, all you who labor and are heavily burdened, and I will give you rest.

(WEB)

Bring your friend’s exhaustion to God through this invitation. Ask him to give them rest in the middle of a day that feels too heavy to carry.

Romans 8:38-39

38 For I am persuaded that neither death, nor life, nor angels, nor principalities, nor things present, nor things to come, nor powers, 39 nor height, nor depth, nor any other created thing, will be able to separate us from God’s love, which is in Christ Jesus our Lord.

(WEB)

Pray this passage for your friend’s sense of security. Ask that nothing, not even this grief, would convince them that God has stepped away from them.

2 Corinthians 1:3-4

3 Blessed be the God and Father of our Lord Jesus Christ, the Father of mercies and God of all comfort; 4 who comforts us in all our affliction, that we may be able to comfort those who are in any affliction, through the comfort with which we ourselves are comforted by God.

(WEB)

Ask God to meet your friend in their sorrow and to show them that he is the God of all comfort. Then pray that they would one day be able to pass that comfort on to others.

How to Pray This Prayer

Try praying this prayer first thing, before you check your messages or look at the news. Sit somewhere quiet with a cup of tea or coffee, and hold something in your hands, like a smooth stone or the cup itself, so your mind has something to settle on. You might write your friend’s name at the top of a note on your phone so you can glance back at it through the day.

You can also pray this with someone else. Ask a spouse, roommate or prayer partner to read it with you, or send the prayer to a small group who can pray for your friend in the same hour. Let your friend know you are praying for them, but you do not need to tell them every word you said to God. Sometimes a short text like “I prayed for you this morning” is enough to let them know they were carried.

A Blessing to Close

May the Lord go before your friend today and walk beside them every step of the way. May he be a quiet comfort when the day turns heavy, and a gentle strength when they feel too tired to stand. May they know, even in small ways, that they are held and that love has not left them.
