This evening prayer is written for a new father who has come to the end of a long day of feeding, soothing, worrying and trying to sleep. It is meant for the quiet hours after the baby settles, or during the last minutes before you close your eyes. You can read it aloud exactly as written, or use it as a starting point and speak your own words where your heart needs to say more.
Evening Prayer for a New Father
Lord, the day is ending and I am tired in a way I did not expect. I have been awake through the night hours and up again with the sun, and my body and mind feel stretched thin. Thank you that you do not sleep and do not tire. Thank you that when I cannot hold myself together, you are still holding everything, including this little one who depends on me. Please take the weight of the day from my shoulders and set it down in your hands.
I ask you to watch over my child tonight. Guard their breathing, their rest and their small heart while I sleep. Give my partner strength and peace, and let us be a team even when we are both exhausted. Where I feel afraid that I am not doing enough or doing it right, remind me that you have given me this child for a reason and that you will supply what I lack. Teach me to be patient with myself as I learn this new role.
Thank you for the moments of joy in this day, the first smile, the warm weight against my chest, the small victories that nobody else sees. Let gratitude outweigh the worry as I close my eyes. Give me rest that is real and deep, and wake me in the morning with fresh mercy for the day ahead. Amen.
A Shorter Version to Pray in a Moment
Father, I am worn out and my child is asleep for now. Hold us both through this night. Watch over my family, steady my hands and quiet my fears. Thank you for the gift of this little life and for your faithfulness when I feel weak. Give me rest, and let me wake up ready to love again. Amen.
Scriptures to Pray Alongside
Psalm 127:2
It is vain for you to rise up early, to stay up late, eating the bread of toil; for he gives sleep to his loved ones.

This verse speaks to the restless worry that keeps a tired father awake. As you pray it, admit that the work of caring for your family cannot be done by effort alone, and ask God to give you the sleep he has promised to his beloved.
Psalm 4:8
In peace I will both lay myself down and sleep, for you, the LORD alone, make me live in safety.
(WEB)
Use this psalm as a way of closing the day in trust. Speak it slowly, and let each phrase be a decision to lie down in God’s protection rather than to keep watch over every sound in the house.
Psalm 121:3-4
3 He will not allow your foot to be moved. He who keeps you will not slumber. 4 Behold, he who keeps Israel will neither slumber nor sleep.
(WEB)
When you pray these lines, you are asking God to keep watch over your child and over you. Name the people you love and place them under the one who neither slumbers nor sleeps.
Matthew 11:28
“Come to me, all you who labor and are heavily burdened, and I will give you rest.
(WEB)
Jesus invites the weary to come to him, and that includes a new father running on empty. Bring your exhaustion to him as you pray, and ask him to teach you how to rest in his presence rather than in your own strength.
Lamentations 3:22-23
22 It is because of the LORD’s loving kindnesses that we are not consumed, because his compassion doesn’t fail. 23 They are new every morning. Great is your faithfulness.
(WEB)
This passage reminds you that God’s mercies are renewed each morning. Pray it as a promise for tomorrow, asking that the compassion of the Lord will meet you again when the baby wakes and the day begins.
How to Pray This Prayer
Try praying this evening prayer after the last feed or at the moment you finally lay down, perhaps with a hand resting on the crib rail or on the back of the baby’s blanket. Keeping one hand on something that matters to you can help your mind settle as the words are spoken. If you share the room with your partner, you might pray it together in a low voice, taking turns with the lines.
You can also invite someone else to pray it over you, such as your spouse, a friend, a grandparent or someone from your church. Many new fathers find that hearing a trusted voice speak these words is a relief they did not know they needed. On nights when sleep does not come quickly, return to the shorter version and let it carry you through the hours.
A Blessing to Close
May the Lord who keeps watch over Israel keep watch over you tonight. May he steady your heart, quiet your fears and grant you the rest your body and spirit are longing for. May he guard your little one and your whole household, and may you wake to find his mercies new again.
