These prayers for a restful night are written for the end of the day, when the house has gone quiet and your mind will not. Pray them in bed, in a chair beside the bed, or on the edge of the sofa before the lights go out. You can read the prayer aloud exactly as it is written, or use it as a starting point and speak your own words to God where yours come more easily.
Prayers for a Restful Night
Lord, the day is finished, and I bring it to you as it is. I bring the conversations I replayed on the drive home, the email I should have answered better, the bill I still have not paid, and the worry about tomorrow that keeps tapping at the edge of my thoughts. You know every part of it. I do not have to explain it perfectly, and I do not have to fix it tonight. Take what I cannot carry and hold it for me.
Quiet my body and my mind. Slow my breathing and let my shoulders drop. If sleep is slow to come, let it not turn into a battle with myself. Let my thoughts settle the way a lake settles when the wind stops. Guard the hours I cannot see, and keep my family, my home and everyone I love in your care while I rest. Keep watch over the people who are awake tonight, the ones in hospitals, the ones working night shifts, and the ones lying awake with fear.
Thank you for this day, even the hard parts of it. Thank you for the small mercies I almost missed, and for the fact that you do not sleep and never leave your watch. Because you are awake, I can rest. I give you the night and I receive your peace in its place. Amen.
A Shorter Version to Pray in a Moment
Father, I am tired and my mind is still running. Take my worries and set them down where I can stop picking them up. Still my thoughts, calm my heart, and let me sleep without fear. Keep my people safe while I rest, and wake me with fresh strength in the morning. Thank you for being awake for me. Amen.
Scriptures to Pray Alongside
Psalm 4:8
In peace I will both lay myself down and sleep, for you, the LORD alone, make me live in safety.
(WEB)
Read this slowly, one phrase at a time, as a way of handing the night over to God. It is a statement of trust, and you can make it your own by naming the specific things you are trusting him with.
Psalm 127:2
It is vain for you to rise up early, to stay up late, eating the bread of toil; for he gives sleep to his loved ones.
(WEB)
This verse reminds you that rest is a gift from God and not a reward you must earn by finishing everything first. Pray it as permission to stop working and receive the sleep he already provides.
Psalm 3:5
I laid myself down and slept. I awakened; for the LORD sustains me.
(WEB)
Use this verse when fear keeps you awake. Speak the first line as a testimony of what God has done before, then ask him to sustain you through the hours ahead.
Psalm 121:3-4
3 He will not allow your foot to be moved. He who keeps you will not slumber. 4 Behold, he who keeps Israel will neither slumber nor sleep.
(WEB)
Pray these lines over the people in your home, and over yourself, asking God to be the one who never drowses while you sleep. Let the image of a watchful keeper settle your anxious thoughts.
Matthew 11:28
“Come to me, all you who labor and are heavily burdened, and I will give you rest.
(WEB)
This invitation from Jesus is a good one to pray when you feel weighed down by the day. Bring the specific load you are carrying and ask him to give you the rest he has offered.
How to Pray This Prayer
Try praying this about thirty minutes before you intend to sleep, so that you are not rushing from the prayer straight into the next task. Turn off the bright screens if you can, lie down or sit in a dim room, and rest one hand on your chest or your stomach. Feel the slow rise and fall as you read, and pause after each paragraph to notice what is still heavy.
If the list of worries keeps growing, write the three most pressing ones on a sheet of paper and place it on the nightstand, then pray over the paper. Couples, roommates and parents can pray the prayer together, taking turns reading a paragraph each. Many people also find it helpful to have a friend pray for them by phone or text before bed, so the night is held by more than one voice.
A Blessing to Close
May the Lord who never slumbers keep watch over you tonight. May your body find rest, your mind find quiet, and your heart find the peace that does not depend on how the day went. May you wake refreshed and ready to meet the morning in his strength.
