This night prayer is written for a new father lying awake after a feeding, listening for the baby, or lying down at last with a head full of tomorrow. Pray it at bedtime or during a night feed, when the house is quiet and your mind will not settle. You can read it aloud exactly as written, or use it as a starting point and speak the words that rise up from your own tiredness.
Night Prayer for a New Father
Lord, the day is ending, and I am so tired. My body aches from carrying and rocking, and my mind keeps replaying every cry, every diaper, every worry about whether I am doing this right. I do not know everything I am supposed to know as a father. Tonight I simply hand it all to you. Take the fear I carry about money, sleep, and the small voice that asks if I am enough. Thank you for this child and for my wife, and for the strange, beautiful gift of being trusted with a life so small and so new.
Watch over our home while we sleep. Keep the baby safe in her crib and in her breathing, and guard the rooms where we rest from every danger we cannot see. If I wake in the dark, let me remember that you have not stopped watching. Give me patience when the night feels endless, gentleness with my wife when we are both running on empty, and a steady heart when I cannot find the words. Quiet my restless thoughts and let me rest in your care, trusting that you are awake even when I am not.
Thank you for the small mercies of this day: a laugh, a warm bottle, a moment of calm I did not expect. Help me sleep now, and wake tomorrow with fresh strength for the work you have given me. Amen.
A Shorter Version to Pray in a Moment
Father, I am worn out and a little afraid tonight. Hold this little one and hold me too. Keep our home safe, give my wife and me rest, and help me trust you with what I cannot control. Let me sleep, and let me wake ready to love well. Amen.

How to Pray This Prayer
Choose a moment that is already part of your night, such as the walk back to bed after a feed or the minute before you turn off the lamp. Keep a hand on the crib rail, your wife’s arm, or your own chest as you pray, and let the physical touch anchor your attention when your mind drifts. If you cannot speak aloud without waking the baby, whisper, or simply pray the words silently in your head.
Invite your wife to pray this with you, or to pray her own version over you both. Many new fathers find it easier to be prayed for than to pray, and sharing the words can close the distance that exhaustion creates between you. If you are alone on the night shift, pray it over your child and your partner by name, and trust that God hears a tired father just as clearly as a rested one.
A Blessing to Close
May the Lord who never slumbers keep you and your family safe through this night. May he calm your heart, steady your hands, and fill your rest with his peace until morning comes.
