This night prayer is for the last hours of one month as you step toward the next. It is meant for the evening before the calendar turns, when the old pages are closing and the new ones feel unwritten. You can read it aloud exactly as it is written, or let it be a starting point and speak your own words in the same spirit.

Night Prayer for a New Month

Lord, the day is ending and the month is ending with it. I bring you what this month has held: the work I finished and the work I left undone, the conversations that went well and the ones I replay in my head, the bills I paid and the worries I carried. Some of it I am thankful for, and some of it I am tired of. I lay all of it in your hands tonight, and I ask you to receive it the way a parent takes a child’s coat at the door, without judgment and without fuss.

As I look ahead to the new month, I feel both hope and a little dread. I do not know what the next four weeks will bring, whether there will be good news or hard news, a call from the doctor or a quiet morning with coffee. I ask you to go before me into those unknown days. Give me wisdom for the decisions I must make, patience for the people who test me, and enough energy to do the work that is mine to do without pretending I can do the work that is yours.

Tonight I ask for rest. Keep my mind from running ahead of me into tomorrow’s list. Quiet the voice that says I should have done more. Guard my sleep, guard the people I love under this roof and beyond it, and guard the house while we are sleeping. Thank you for the month that is closing, for the small mercies I almost missed, and for the promise that you are awake and at work while I rest. Amen.

A Shorter Version to Pray in a Moment

Lord, the month is almost over and I am not ready for the next one. Take what I could not finish, forgive what I did badly, and thank you for what went right. Go before me into the new days. Let me sleep tonight and wake to your mercy again tomorrow. Amen.

Use this verse to ask God to help you see the new month as a gift of limited days. Ask for a heart that uses the coming weeks wisely rather than anxiously.

Matthew 6:34

Therefore don’t be anxious for tomorrow, for tomorrow will be anxious for itself. Each day’s own evil is sufficient.

How to Pray This Prayer

Pray this prayer in the last quiet part of the evening, after the dishes are done and the lights are low. Sitting on the edge of your bed or in a favorite chair works well, and holding something in your hands, such as a cup of tea, a worn Bible, or a pen with which you write the next month’s date on a card, can help your body settle while your mind slows down. If you keep a calendar, you might turn to the new month and touch the first page as you pray.

You can also pray this with someone else, such as a spouse, a roommate, or a friend who lives far away and agrees to pray at the same hour. Read it aloud together, or take turns reading a paragraph each. Praying it as a household at the end of the month can turn a stressful transition into a shared moment of trust and rest.

A Blessing to Close

May the Lord who keeps watch over you tonight also walk ahead of you into the new month. May he give you sleep that restores, mercy for what is past, and courage for what is coming. May you wake to find that his faithfulness is already waiting for you in the first light of the day.
