This prayer is for the end of the day, when your mind is still running through tomorrow’s list and the events of today refuse to settle. Pray it in the evening, after the dishes are done and before you turn out the light. You can read it aloud exactly as written, or use it as a starting point and speak your own words in the spaces it leaves open.

Daily Prayer for a Restful Night

Lord, I come to you at the close of this day. You were with me when it began, and you have been with me through every hour since. Thank you for the work I finished and for the moments of kindness I received. Thank you for the food on the table, the roof over my head, and the people who care whether I come home safely. Where I fell short today, I ask for your forgiveness, and I receive it.

Now I bring you what I am still carrying. My thoughts are crowded with the conversation I need to have tomorrow, the bill that has not been paid, and the worry about how someone I love is doing. I set each of these down in your hands. You know the details I cannot hold all at once. Quiet my mind so that I can rest, and let the worries wait for the morning, when I will have strength to face them.

Guard my sleep tonight. Keep the house peaceful and my body still. If I wake in the dark, remind me that you do not sleep and that you are near. Let me rest in the simple truth that I am safe in your care, and that tomorrow’s problems do not need to be solved before dawn. Give me sleep that restores me, and wake me refreshed to serve you. Amen.

A Shorter Version to Pray in a Moment

Lord, the day is ending and I am tired. Take the weight of it from my shoulders. Quiet the thoughts that keep circling, and give me rest in your presence. Watch over the people I love while they sleep, and watch over me. I trust you with the night and with tomorrow. Amen.

Scriptures to Pray Alongside

Psalm 4:8

In peace I will both lay myself down and sleep, for you, the LORD alone, make me live in safety.

(WEB)

Pray this verse slowly as you lie down, letting each phrase settle in. It names the peace that comes from God alone, not from a perfect day or a finished to-do list. Speak it back to him as a statement of trust.

Psalm 127:2

It is vain for you to rise up early, to stay up late, eating the bread of toil; for he gives sleep to his loved ones.

(WEB)

This verse reminds you that striving late into the night is not what God requires of you. Pray it as a release, handing him the work you could not finish and admitting that you are not the one who holds everything together.

Psalm 3:5

I laid myself down and slept. I awakened; for the LORD sustains me.

(WEB)

When fear makes sleep hard, this verse offers a concrete picture of God as the one who sustains you through the dark hours. Pray it over the specific fear that keeps you awake and thank him for watching over you.

Matthew 11:28

“Come to me, all you who labor and are heavily burdened, and I will give you rest.

(WEB)

Jesus speaks these words to people who are worn out. Pray them personally, naming the exhaustion you feel, and receive the invitation to come to him instead of carrying it alone into the night.

Philippians 4:6-7

6 In nothing be anxious, but in everything, by prayer and petition with thanksgiving, let your requests be made known to God. 7 And the peace of God, which surpasses all understanding, will guard your hearts and your thoughts in Christ Jesus.

(WEB)

Use this passage to bring each anxious thought to God in prayer, one at a time, until your mind grows quieter. Pray for the peace it promises to guard your heart and mind while you sleep.

How to Pray This Prayer

Choose a set time, such as the moment after you brush your teeth or once the lights in the house are turned down. Keep a notebook or your phone nearby so you can jot down any task that suddenly comes to mind. Writing it down lets you tell God about it and then let it go, rather than replaying it in bed.

If you share a home, consider praying this together with a spouse, a child, or a roommate, taking turns reading a paragraph each. Holding hands or resting a hand on a shoulder can make the words feel more present. If you are alone, you might place your hand on your chest while you pray, as a small physical reminder that God is close.

A Blessing to Close

May the Lord keep you tonight and give you rest that reaches down into your body and your mind. May he hold the people you love in the same care he holds you. And may you wake in the morning knowing that the one who watched over you through the night is already at work in the day ahead.
