This night prayer is written for the end of the day, when the house is quiet and your mind will not stop replaying what happened or what tomorrow holds. Pray it at bedtime, lying down or sitting on the edge of the bed, before you turn out the light. You can read it aloud exactly as written, or use it as a starting point and speak in your own words.

Night Prayer for a Restful Night

Father, the day is over, and I bring it to You as it is. Some of it went well, and I thank You for those moments. Some of it did not, and I ask You to take the words I regret, the worries I could not solve, and the people I left unfinished business with. I set them down here, because I cannot carry them into sleep and still expect to rest.

Quiet my thoughts, Lord. When my mind starts running through the list of things I have to do tomorrow, slow it down. Remind me that You are awake while I sleep, and that nothing in my schedule or my inbox is bigger than You. Watch over the people I love, especially those who are sick, grieving, or far away, and keep them safe tonight. Guard my home and the people sleeping under its roof.

Give me a body that can let go and a heart that trusts You with what I cannot control. Let my sleep be deep and untroubled, and wake me refreshed in the morning, ready for the day You have already prepared. Amen.

A Shorter Version to Pray in a Moment

Lord, I am tired and my mind is still busy. Take the day from my hands and the worries from my heart. Watch over my family and my home tonight, and give me a rest I did not earn but gladly receive. Let me wake to a new morning with You. Amen.

Scriptures to Pray Alongside

Psalm 4:8

In peace I will both lay myself down and sleep, for you, the LORD alone, make me live in safety.

(WEB)

Pray this verse slowly, letting each phrase settle before moving to the next. Thank God that your safety does not depend on your vigilance, and let your body follow the words toward sleep.

Psalm 127:2

It is vain for you to rise up early, to stay up late, eating the bread of toil; for he gives sleep to his loved ones.

(WEB)

Use this verse to lay down the habit of working late to prove your worth. Ask God to help you believe that He provides for you even while you are resting.

Psalm 3:5

I laid myself down and slept. I awakened; for the LORD sustains me.

(WEB)

When fear wakes you in the night, return to this verse. Name the specific thing that frightened you and say that the Lord sustains you, even in that place.

Matthew 11:28

“Come to me, all you who labor and are heavily burdened, and I will give you rest.

(WEB)

Bring your exhaustion, both physical and emotional, to Jesus by name. Pray that He would give you the rest that only He can give, and receive it as an invitation rather than a demand.

Lamentations 3:22-23

22 It is because of the LORD’s loving kindnesses that we are not consumed, because his compassion doesn’t fail. 23 They are new every morning. Great is your faithfulness.

(WEB)

This verse reminds you that God’s mercy begins again each morning. Pray it as you go to sleep, trusting that the day ahead will bring fresh grace along with its new demands.

How to Pray This Prayer

Choose a fixed time each night, such as after you brush your teeth or once the lights in the hallway are off. Keep a small lamp or no light at all, and sit or lie in the same place so your body begins to link that spot with rest. Some people find it helpful to hold something in their hands while they pray, like a smooth stone, a folded blanket, or the edge of a pillow, as a physical way of setting the day down.

If you share a home, invite a spouse, child, or roommate to pray the prayer with you, reading a line each. If you live alone, you might text a friend the words before bed and ask them to pray the same prayer for you that night. Being prayed for by another person can quiet the sense of carrying everything by yourself.

A Blessing to Close

May the Lord who keeps watch over Israel keep watch over you tonight. May He calm the thoughts that run ahead of you, settle the heart that is weary, and give you sleep that restores both body and spirit. May you wake to find His mercy waiting, new as the morning.
