This short morning prayer is written for a small group, meaning a Bible study, a home group, a prayer circle or a team that meets regularly. It is meant to be prayed early in the day, before the first meeting, message or task, so that the group starts its time together by asking God for what they will need. You can read it aloud exactly as written, or use it as a starting point and add the names and concerns of the people in your own group.

Short Morning Prayer for a Small Group

Lord, thank You for this new morning. Before the day fills up with messages, errands and noise, we come to You first. You made this morning, and You know what each person in this group will walk into today: the difficult conversation at work, the child who needs a ride, the doctor’s call, the empty inbox that is somehow full of worry. Meet each of us where we are. Give us patience with the people we will see, and honesty with ourselves about what we are carrying.

Be among us when we gather. Let our conversations be kind and our listening careful. When someone in the group shares something heavy, help the rest of us to hold it gently and not rush to fix it. Guard our words so they build up rather than tear down. Where anyone feels alone or afraid this week, remind them that they are known by You and by the people sitting beside them. Bind us together in a love that is steady and real.

Go before us into the hours ahead. Order our steps, steady our hands and keep our minds clear enough to notice the chance to help, to forgive or to say a word of encouragement. We give You the people we are praying for by name, and we trust You with the outcomes we cannot see. Thank You that You are already at work today. Amen.

A Shorter Version to Pray in a Moment

Father, we start this day in Your presence. Go with each person in this group as they move through their work, their family and their own quiet thoughts. Help us be kind when we are tired and honest when it is hard. Gather us together when we meet, and let us encourage one another the way You encourage us. Keep us close to You all day. Amen.

Scriptures to Pray Alongside

Lamentations 3:22-23

22 It is because of the LORD’s loving kindnesses that we are not consumed, because his compassion doesn’t fail. 23 They are new every morning. Great is your faithfulness.

(WEB)

Pray these words as you wake, thanking God that His faithful love is new each morning. Ask Him to remind your group that yesterday’s failures and worries do not define today, and that His mercy is ready for each person as they begin again.

Psalm 143:8

Cause me to hear your loving kindness in the morning, for I trust in you. Cause me to know the way in which I should walk, for I lift up my soul to you.

(WEB)

This verse is a request to hear God’s love early. Ask Him to make the first thing you think about today His steadfast love, and to show your group which way to walk when the day’s choices come.

Psalm 5:3

The LORD, in the morning you shall hear my voice. In the morning I will lay my requests before you, and will watch expectantly.

(WEB)

The psalmist speaks to God first thing in the morning and waits expectantly. Pray this with your group as a habit of setting the day before the Lord before anything else asks for your attention.

Proverbs 3:5-6

5 Trust in the LORD with all your heart, and don’t lean on your own understanding. 6 In all your ways acknowledge him, and he will make your paths straight.

(WEB)

Use this passage to ask God to guide the decisions your group will face today. Name the specific choices people are weighing, and ask Him to make the path straight where it is crooked.

Philippians 4:6-7

6 In nothing be anxious, but in everything, by prayer and petition with thanksgiving, let your requests be made known to God. 7 And the peace of God, which surpasses all understanding, will guard your hearts and your thoughts in Christ Jesus.

(WEB)

Paul invites believers to bring every worry to God in prayer and gratitude. Pray this with your group by naming the anxieties each person carries, then asking for the peace that guards the heart and mind.

How to Pray This Prayer

Pray this prayer in the first quiet moments of the morning, before phones and emails take over. A kitchen table with a cup of coffee, a seat by a window or a few minutes in the car before work all work well. If your group meets in person, you might pray it together at the start of your next meeting, or send it out as a message so each person can pray it on their own before the day begins.

Keep something in your hands while you pray, such as a notebook, a pen or a small card with the names of group members on it. As you read, pause after each name and say it aloud. Invite another person from the group to lead the prayer on certain mornings, so the words come from more than one voice and everyone has a turn to pray for the others.

A Blessing to Close

May the Lord bless each person in this group and keep them through the day. May He make His face shine upon them and give them grace for every conversation and task. May they walk in His peace, encourage one another with honest love, and rest in the knowledge that they are never alone.
