This prayer is for parents, grandparents, and other loved ones who want to lift a teenage son to God. It can be prayed in the morning before school, at the kitchen table in the evening, or during a quiet moment when worry has settled in. You can read it aloud exactly as written, or use it as a starting point and speak in your own words.

Prayer for a Teenage Son

Father, you know my son better than I do. You saw him before he was born, and you know the thoughts he carries that he has not yet found words for. I bring him to you today with a full heart. Some days I see a young man becoming who he was made to be, and other days I see a boy who is lost, angry, or quiet in ways that frighten me. Be near him in both. Give him a clear sense of who he is in you, so that he does not have to measure his worth by grades, friends, or what the people around him seem to think.

Protect him, Lord, from the pressures that press in from every side: the comparisons on his phone, the cruel remarks at school, the pull toward choices he will regret. Surround him with friends who help him grow and with adults who will tell him the truth with kindness. Where he feels pulled in two directions, give him the courage to choose what is good, and the humility to ask for help when he needs it. When he makes mistakes, and he will, let him come home to a place where he is still loved. Shape his heart, his faith, and his future in your hands. Amen.

A Shorter Version to Pray in a Moment

Lord, my son is growing up, and I cannot follow him everywhere he goes. Watch over him today. Guard his mind, his body, and his heart. Give him wisdom when he is tempted, peace when he is anxious, and courage when he is afraid. Remind him that he belongs to you and that you are still working in him. Let him know he is loved. Amen.

Pray that your son would learn to trust God with decisions he cannot yet see clearly, and that he would notice the paths God opens for him when he looks to Him first.

Philippians 4:6-7

6 In nothing be anxious, but in everything, by prayer and petition with thanksgiving, let your requests be made known to God. 7 And the peace of God, which surpasses all understanding, will guard your hearts and your thoughts in Christ Jesus.

Psalm 139:13-14

(WEB)

Ephesians 6:1-4

1 Children, obey your parents in the Lord, for this is right. 2 “Honor your father and mother,” which is the first commandment with a promise: 3 “that it may be well with you, and you may live long on the earth.” 4 You fathers, don’t provoke your children to wrath, but nurture them in the discipline and instruction of the Lord.

(WEB)

This passage speaks to both sides of the home. Pray that your son would honor his parents and that you would bring up him up with patience and encouragement, not provocation.

1 Corinthians 16:13-14

13 Watch! Stand firm in the faith! Be courageous! Be strong! 14 Let all that you do be done in love.

(WEB)

Pray that your son would stand firm in his faith, act with courage, and let everything he does be done in love, especially when peer pressure pushes him toward the opposite.

How to Pray This Prayer

Choose a time that is regularly yours, such as the drive to school, the minutes before he gets home, or the quiet after everyone has gone to bed. Keep a small notebook nearby and write down what you notice: a friendship that worries you, a conversation that went well, a need he has mentioned. Let those notes shape your prayers over the weeks ahead, so that you are praying about his real life and not an idea of it.

Invite others to pray for him too. A spouse, a grandparent, a youth leader, or a trusted friend can carry him before God alongside you. If you have a moment alone with your son, consider praying a short blessing over him with your hand on his shoulder, even if he rolls his eyes. Small, steady prayers often matter more than long, dramatic ones.

A Blessing to Close

May the Lord bless this young man and keep him. May the Lord make His face shine upon him and give him grace for each day. May he grow in wisdom, in courage, and in kindness, and may he know, deep down, that he is deeply loved by the One who made him.
