This prayer is for anyone who loves their church and wants to ask God to strengthen it, whether you attend, serve, lead, or simply pray for the people who gather there. Pray it on a Sunday morning before the service, during the week while the building sits quiet, or whenever you hear of a church family facing a hard season. You can read it aloud exactly as written, or use it as a starting point and speak in your own words.
Prayer for a Strong Church
Lord, you are the one who builds your church, and we come to you today asking you to make it strong in the ways that matter most. Strengthen the people who sit in the pews and the people who stand at the front. Give our pastors wisdom when decisions are heavy and rest when their days run long. Help the volunteers who set up chairs, teach children, and answer the phone to serve with joy rather than quiet resentment.
Make us a people who love one another honestly. Where there is tension between members, bring reconciliation, and where someone feels forgotten, let them be noticed by someone who will show them your care. Protect our unity from gossip and pride. Keep our hearts open to newcomers, and give us the courage to welcome the stranger as though we were welcoming you. Let our worship be sincere, our teaching be faithful, and our mercy be generous toward those outside our walls. Amen.
A Shorter Version to Pray in a Moment
Lord, make our church strong in faith, steady in love, and faithful in truth. Hold our pastors and leaders close, and give every member a sense of belonging in your family. Guard us from division and fear, and help us reach the people around us with your grace. Let the life we share point others to you. Amen.
Scriptures to Pray Alongside
Matthew 16:18
I also tell you that you are Peter, and on this rock I will build my assembly, and the gates of Hades will not prevail against it.
(WEB)
Jesus speaks of building his church with a promise that it will stand firm. When you pray this verse, you are reminding yourself that the church belongs to Christ, and you ask him to keep it secure against every force that would weaken it.
Ephesians 4:3
Being eager to keep the unity of the Spirit in the bond of peace.
(WEB)
Paul urges believers to keep the unity the Spirit gives. Pray this for your congregation by asking God to guard relationships where strain is building and to make peace the habit of your shared life.
Acts 2:42
They continued steadfastly in the apostles’ teaching and fellowship, in the breaking of bread, and prayer.
(WEB)
The early believers gave themselves to teaching, fellowship, meals, and prayer. Use this verse to ask God to renew those same rhythms in your church so that its strength grows from everyday devotion rather than occasional events.
Ephesians 4:11-13
11 He gave some to be apostles; and some, prophets; and some, evangelists; and some, shepherds and teachers; 12 for the perfecting of the saints, to the work of serving, to the building up of the body of Christ; 13 until we all attain to the unity of the faith, and of the knowledge of the Son of God, to a full grown man, to the measure of the stature of the fullness of Christ…
(WEB)
This passage describes Christ giving leaders to equip the saints for service and build up the body. Pray it for those who teach and shepherd your church, and for every member, that each would grow into maturity together.
Psalm 127:1
Unless the LORD builds the house, they labor in vain who build it. Unless the LORD watches over the city, the watchman guards it in vain.
(WEB)
The psalmist reminds us that unless the Lord builds the house, the builders labor in vain. Pray this with humility, admitting that no program or personality can substitute for God’s own work among his people.
How to Pray This Prayer
Many people find it helpful to pray this early in the morning, before the day’s noise begins, perhaps at a kitchen table with a cup of coffee in hand. If you can, keep your church’s bulletin, a photo of the building, or a list of names nearby so your prayer stays concrete. Try writing the names of pastors, ministry leaders, and members going through difficulty on a small card, and place a finger on each one as you pray for them.
You do not need to pray this alone. Invite a friend from church to pray it with you over the phone, or gather a few members for a short prayer meeting before the Sunday service. When you finish, you might send a brief message to someone in leadership to let them know you are holding the church before God, which often encourages them more than you might expect.
A Blessing to Close
May the Lord who builds his church strengthen every heart within it and keep every member rooted in his love. May your congregation grow in faith, in unity, and in kindness to the world around it. And may the peace of Christ guard your church and guide its path for all the days ahead.
