This bedtime prayer is written for the moment when the day is finished and the mind will not quiet down. It asks God for peace that settles the heart and protection that holds through the dark hours. Pray it aloud as it is written, or use it as a starting point and speak your own words in the same spirit.

Bedtime Prayer for Peace and Protection

Lord, the day is over, and I bring it to you now. I bring the conversations that went badly, the worries I carried from the morning, and the things I did not get done. Take them from my hands. Forgive what I got wrong, and help me let go of what I cannot fix before tomorrow. Thank you for the small mercies of this day, the meal, the work, the people who made me laugh.

Father, grant me peace in this room and in my thoughts. Quiet the replaying of old arguments and the lists that keep growing in my head. Guard my family while we sleep, and keep watch over those who are awake tonight, the ones on night shifts, the ones in hospital beds, and the ones lying awake with fear. Surround our home with your protection, and let no harm come near the people I love. Let me rest in the certainty that you do not sleep, and that you are watching over all I cannot see. Amen.

A Shorter Version to Pray in a Moment

Lord, I am tired and my mind is restless. Calm my heart and take the weight I am carrying. Keep me and everyone under this roof safe through the night, and give us rest we did not earn but are grateful to receive. Let me wake refreshed, knowing you were near. Amen.

Scriptures to Pray Alongside

Psalm 4:8

In peace I will both lay myself down and sleep, for you, the LORD alone, make me live in safety.

(WEB)

Read this slowly before you close your eyes. Let it become your own statement that rest is possible because the Lord is the one who keeps you safe, not because your day went well.

Psalm 91:4

He will cover you with his feathers. Under his wings you will take refuge. His faithfulness is your shield and rampart.

(WEB)

Use this picture of God’s protection as a prayer for the house and the people in it. Ask that his faithfulness would surround your home the way a shelter surrounds a sleeping child.

Psalm 3:5

I laid myself down and slept. I awakened; for the LORD sustains me.

(WEB)

Pray this when fear keeps you awake. Thank God for sustaining you through past nights, and ask him to do the same tonight with the same steady care.

Isaiah 26:3

You will keep whoever’s mind is steadfast in perfect peace, because he trusts in you.

(WEB)

Bring your scattered thoughts to this verse and repeat it quietly. Ask God to fix your mind on him, so the anxious thoughts loosen their grip and peace has room to settle.

John 14:27

Peace I leave with you. My peace I give to you; not as the world gives, give I to you. Don’t let your heart be troubled, neither let it be fearful.

(WEB)

Jesus speaks these words to his friends the night before he dies, so they carry real weight. Pray that the peace he gives, which is different from the world’s peace, would settle your heart before you sleep.

How to Pray This Prayer

Choose a time just before you turn out the light, after the phone has gone face down and the lamp is the only thing on. Sit on the edge of the bed or kneel beside it, and keep your hands open in your lap, which helps the body let go of the day. Pray the main prayer slowly, pausing after each concern to name it before God.

If you share a home, you can pray this together with a partner or a child, with each person adding one thing they are carrying. A parent can read it over a sleeping child in a quiet voice, or a spouse can pray it aloud before lying down. Ending the day with someone else praying for you can be one of the most steadying things a household does together.

A Blessing to Close

May the Lord keep you through the night and wake you to a new morning. May his peace guard your heart and your thoughts, and may you lie down without fear. Rest well, for you are held by one who never tires.
