This is an evening prayer for a teacher, written for the end of a school day when the grading is still on the desk, the classroom is quiet, and the day’s conversations keep replaying in your mind. You can pray it aloud as written at bedtime, or read it once and then speak your own words in the same spirit. Either way, it gives you a place to hand the day to God and ask for rest.

Evening Prayer for a Teacher

Lord, the day is ending, and I bring it to you as it is. I think about the students who struggled to focus, the one who came in without breakfast, and the one who was kind to a classmate when no one was watching. I think about the lesson that didn’t land and the conversation with a parent I keep turning over. You saw every bit of it. Take what went well and let me be thankful for it. Take what went badly and let me stop carrying it.

Tonight I release the grading, the lesson plans for tomorrow, and the worry about whether I am doing enough. I cannot make every child learn, and I cannot fix every hard home. Remind me that the work was never mine alone. Give me wisdom for the mornings ahead, patience for the questions I can’t answer yet, and a clear sense of which things can wait until daylight. Guard my sleep, quiet my mind, and keep watch over my students and their families while I rest.

Thank you for the gift of teaching, for the moments when a light comes on in a young face, and for the colleagues who share the load. I rest in your care tonight. Amen.

A Shorter Version to Pray in a Moment

Lord, I am tired and the day is done. Take the worries about my students and my lessons, and hold them for me. Thank you for the good moments today. Keep my mind from racing, guard my sleep, and watch over every child and family I work with. Let me wake refreshed and ready to serve. Amen.

Scriptures to Pray Alongside

Psalm 4:8

In peace I will both lay myself down and sleep, for you, the LORD alone, make me live in safety.

(WEB)

Pray this as you lie down, letting the words settle the question of sleep. Ask God to make your rest a true rest, not one interrupted by thoughts of tomorrow’s class.

Psalm 127:2

It is vain for you to rise up early, to stay up late, eating the bread of toil; for he gives sleep to his loved ones.

(WEB)

Read this slowly and name the work you have done today. Ask God to accept that work for what it is, and to free you from trying to earn his favor through exhaustion.

Matthew 11:28-30

28 “Come to me, all you who labor and are heavily burdened, and I will give you rest. 29 Take my yoke upon you, and learn from me, for I am gentle and humble in heart; and you will find rest for your souls. 30 For my yoke is easy, and my burden is light.”

(WEB)

Bring the weight of your classroom to Jesus in prayer. Ask him to show you what yoke he is giving you tonight, and what burden he is asking you to set down.

Philippians 4:6-7

6 In nothing be anxious, but in everything, by prayer and petition with thanksgiving, let your requests be made known to God. 7 And the peace of God, which surpasses all understanding, will guard your hearts and your thoughts in Christ Jesus.

(WEB)

Turn each worry about a student or a lesson into a specific request. Then pray for the peace that guards your heart and mind as you close your eyes.

Psalm 121:3-4

3 He will not allow your foot to be moved. He who keeps you will not slumber. 4 Behold, he who keeps Israel will neither slumber nor sleep.

(WEB)

Pray this for the children you teach and their families, asking God to keep watch over them through the night. Thank him that he does not sleep and does not grow weary.

How to Pray This Prayer

Pray this at the end of the day, once the school bag is packed and the lights are dimming. A good place is the same chair or corner of the bed each evening, so your body begins to recognize the moment as the day’s close. If you have a notebook, you might write down two or three students or colleagues you want to name before you pray, then read them aloud as part of the prayer.

If your hands feel restless, hold a pen, a mug of tea, or a small object from your desk while you pray, and let it be a reminder to release the day. A spouse, a prayer partner, or a friend from church could also pray this with you by phone or in person, especially on a hard evening. Sharing the prayer lets someone else carry some of what you have put down.

A Blessing to Close

May the Lord who keeps watch over his people be your rest tonight. May he quiet every worry about tomorrow’s classroom and give you sleep that restores your body and mind. May he hold each student in his care and bring you back to your work refreshed, with a steady heart and open hands.
