A night prayer for gratitude helps you close the day by naming what was good in it, even when the day was hard. It is best prayed in bed, at the kitchen table after the dishes, or in the quiet minutes before the lights go out. You can read the prayer below aloud exactly as written, or use it as a starting point and speak your own thanks in the same spirit.

Night Prayer for Gratitude

Father, the day is ending and I am tired. Thank You for the ordinary gifts I rushed past this morning: the warm water in the shower, the coffee that tasted good, the sound of someone I love laughing in another room. Thank You for the work that got done and for the work that did not, because You were still faithful in both. Forgive me for the moments I was short with people, for the worries I carried instead of handing to You, and for the times I forgot to notice You at all.

Tonight I bring You the things that are still heavy. I ask You to look after the people I am anxious about, and to be near the ones who are sick, grieving, or far away. Guard my home and my sleep while I rest. If my mind starts racing, quiet it with the reminder that You have held every hour of this day, including the ones I could not manage. Let my last thoughts be of You and of what You have given.

Thank You for another day of life, for mercy that meets me each morning, and for a God who does not sleep when I do. I rest in that truth tonight. Amen.

A Shorter Version to Pray in a Moment

Lord, I am grateful for this day, even the parts that were hard. Thank You for the small good things I almost missed, and for Your steady presence through all of it. Watch over the people I love and the ones I worry about. Keep me safe while I sleep, and let me wake tomorrow ready to see You again. Amen.

Scriptures to Pray Alongside

Psalm 136:1

Give thanks to the LORD, for he is good; for his loving kindness endures forever.

(WEB)

Read this slowly as a list of reasons to thank God. Name one or two specific gifts from today before you move on, so the verse becomes your own confession of thanks.

Lamentations 3:22-23

22 It is because of the LORD’s loving kindnesses that we are not consumed, because his compassion doesn’t fail. 23 They are new every morning. Great is your faithfulness.

(WEB)

When today feels like it used up your strength, pray these words over tomorrow. Ask God to renew His mercy on you in the morning, trusting that His faithfulness does not depend on how the day went.

Psalm 4:8

In peace I will both lay myself down and sleep, for you, the LORD alone, make me live in safety.

(WEB)

Use this verse as you lie down. Speak it quietly as a statement of trust, letting your body relax as you name God as the one who keeps you safe through the dark hours.

Philippians 4:6-7

6 In nothing be anxious, but in everything, by prayer and petition with thanksgiving, let your requests be made known to God. 7 And the peace of God, which surpasses all understanding, will guard your hearts and your thoughts in Christ Jesus.

(WEB)

If worries crowd in at bedtime, bring each one to God by name in prayer. Then thank Him for what He has already done, and ask for the peace that guards your heart and mind.

Psalm 127:2

It is vain for you to rise up early, to stay up late, eating the bread of toil; for he gives sleep to his loved ones.

(WEB)

This verse reminds you that rest is a gift and not a failure. Pray it when you feel you must finish everything before you can sleep, and ask God to give you rest He has already provided.

How to Pray This Prayer

Pray this prayer in the last few minutes before sleep, once the phone is down and the room is dim. Sit on the edge of the bed or stay under the covers, whichever helps you settle. Keep a small notebook on the nightstand and write down one thing you were grateful for, then read the prayer while the note is in front of you.

If you share a home, you can pray it with a spouse, a child, or a roommate, taking turns reading a paragraph each. Parents can pray the shorter version over a child at bedtime, adding the child’s name and one thing they were thankful for that day. Pray it as often as you need, and let it be a habit that brings you back to gratitude each night.

A Blessing to Close

May the Lord who kept this day keep you through the night. May you wake to His mercy, rest in His peace, and remember how many good things He has given you. The Lord bless you and keep you, and fill your heart with thanks.
