This short morning prayer is for anyone who spends their days serving other people, whether that means caring for children, patients, customers, neighbors, a congregation, or a family in need. Pray it first thing, before the phone starts ringing and the day’s demands take over. You can read it aloud exactly as written, or use it as a starting point and speak your own words about the people you expect to meet today.

Short Morning Prayer for Those Serving Others

Lord, I wake up knowing that today someone will need something from me. Some of them will be grateful and some will not. Some will ask for more than I have to give. Before I step into any of it, I bring my tiredness to you and ask you to meet me in it. Give me patience for the person who is hard to be patient with, and gentleness for the one who is grieving quietly in front of me. Help me remember that I am not the source of what they need, only a vessel through which you might bring it.

I ask for wisdom in the decisions I will have to make before lunch, and grace for the mistakes I will certainly make by evening. Keep my words kind when I am rushed, and my hands steady when I am stretched thin. Where I feel empty, fill me. Where I feel proud of what I have done, humble me. Let the people I serve today see something of your care through the ordinary things I do for them. Be near to my family and to those I love who are not with me this morning, and hold them while I am away. Amen.

A Shorter Version to Pray in a Moment

Father, I am already tired and the day has barely started. Give me strength for the next task and kindness for the next person I meet. Slow my mind so I can listen well, and keep my tongue from anything careless. Help me serve with joy rather than duty, and remind me that you see every small thing I do today. In Jesus’ name, amen.

Scriptures to Pray Alongside

Galatians 6:9

Let us not be weary in doing good, for we will reap in due season, if we don’t give up.

(WEB)

Pray this as a promise over your weariness. Ask God to keep you from giving up on the people you serve, especially on the days when your effort seems to go unnoticed.

Matthew 20:28

Even as the Son of Man came not to be served, but to serve, and to give his life as a ransom for many.”

(WEB)

Pray this by asking Jesus to shape your heart after his own. Ask him to help you serve without needing to be thanked or seen for it.

Psalm 121:1-2

1 I will lift up my eyes to the hills. Where does my help come from? 2 My help comes from the LORD, who made heaven and earth.

(WEB)

Pray this when you feel you must hold everything together yourself. Lift your eyes from the pile of tasks and ask God to be your help today.

Colossians 3:23

And whatever you do, work heartily, as for the Lord, and not for men…

(WEB)

Pray this over the work in front of you, whatever it is. Ask God to help you do it wholeheartedly, as something offered to him and not only to the people around you.

Isaiah 40:29

He gives power to the weak. He increases the strength of him who has no might.

(WEB)

Pray this when your strength is gone before the day is. Ask God to give power to the weary and to renew you in the places where you have run dry.

How to Pray This Prayer

Try praying it while your hands are busy: as you make the coffee, fold the laundry, or walk to the car. Keeping your hands occupied can help your attention stay on God instead of drifting to the to-do list. If you have a few minutes before the house wakes or before your shift begins, sit somewhere quiet, read the prayer slowly, and pause after each sentence to let it sink in.

If you serve alongside others, invite a spouse, a coworker, or a friend to pray it with you, or to pray it for you over the phone. Many people who serve find that a single minute of shared prayer at the start of the day makes the rest of it lighter to carry. Pray the names of the specific people you know you will see today, so the prayer stays tied to real faces and real needs.

A Blessing to Close

May the Lord go before you into this day and walk with you through every task and conversation. May he give you enough strength for what is asked and enough peace for what is not. May the people you serve be blessed by your presence, and may you be refreshed by the God who never grows weary.
