This is a bedtime prayer for our marriage, written for couples who want to close the day by asking God to bless their relationship, release the tensions of the day, and guard their home through the night. It is best prayed together, side by side or hand in hand, just before sleep. You can read it aloud as written, or use it as a starting point and speak your own words in the same spirit.

Bedtime Prayer for Our Marriage

Lord, thank You for the day that is ending. Thank You for the work we finished, the meals we shared, and the small kindnesses we gave and received. We confess the moments we were short with each other, the words we wish we had chosen differently, and the silence we let grow when we should have spoken. Forgive us, and help us release those things to You now so they do not follow us into our sleep.

Father, we ask You to be the center of this marriage. Where we are tired, give us patience. Where we are worried about money, our health, our children, or our work, quiet those fears and remind us that You are already holding what we cannot carry. Keep our hearts soft toward one another. Help us to listen well, to forgive quickly, and to speak tenderly even when we disagree.

Guard our home tonight. Watch over our sleep and protect us from anything that would harm us or divide us. Let this bed be a place of rest and not of resentment. When we wake, let us find that Your mercy has been new again, and let us love each other with the same grace You have shown us. Amen.

A Shorter Version to Pray in a Moment

Lord, we are tired, and we want to end this day well with each other. Forgive what went wrong today, and help us let it go. Bless our marriage with patience and kindness. Keep us safe through the night, and give us rest in Your care. We trust You with tomorrow. Amen.

Scriptures to Pray Alongside

Psalm 4:8

In peace I will both lay myself down and sleep, for you, the LORD alone, make me live in safety.

(WEB)

Pray this verse as a way of handing the night over to God. Ask Him to give you and your spouse the peace to sleep without carrying the weight of the day into your dreams.

Ephesians 4:26

“Be angry, and don’t sin.” Don’t let the sun go down on your wrath…

(WEB)

Pray this verse as a request for help with anger. Ask God to show you how to deal with conflict before the sun goes down, so that disagreements do not settle into bitterness overnight.

Lamentations 3:22-23

22 It is because of the LORD’s loving kindnesses that we are not consumed, because his compassion doesn’t fail. 23 They are new every morning. Great is your faithfulness.

(WEB)

Pray this passage with gratitude for God’s faithfulness. Thank Him that His mercies are renewed each morning, and ask Him to renew your love for your spouse as well.

Colossians 3:13

Bearing with one another, and forgiving each other, if any man has a complaint against any; even as Christ forgave you, so you also do.

(WEB)

Pray this verse for the grace to forgive. Ask God to help you bear with your spouse’s faults and to release any grievance you are still holding tonight.

Psalm 127:2

It is vain for you to rise up early, to stay up late, eating the bread of toil; for he gives sleep to his loved ones.

(WEB)

Pray this verse as an admission that you cannot control everything. Thank God that He gives rest to those He loves, and ask Him to teach you to rest in Him rather than in your own striving.

How to Pray This Prayer

Choose a time when the house is quiet, perhaps after the lights are dimmed and before either of you falls asleep. Sit close together, and if you feel comfortable, hold hands or rest a hand on your spouse’s shoulder. Let one person read the prayer aloud while the other listens, then switch if you like. Pause between paragraphs so that each of you can add a sentence of your own.

If you are praying alone while your spouse is away or asleep, pray it quietly in your own bed and name your spouse specifically. You can also invite a trusted friend or family member to pray for your marriage on the same night, so that you are not carrying it by yourself. Keep a short list beside the bed of anything you want to bring before God again tomorrow.

A Blessing to Close

May the Lord who keeps watch over you and your spouse give you rest tonight. May He calm every worry, soften every hard word, and fill your home with His peace. May He hold you both close and wake you tomorrow with fresh love for one another.
