This page gives you a written prayer for your mother and father, along with a shorter version for moments when you only have a breath to spare. You can pray it aloud exactly as written, or read it once and then speak in your own words. Use it in the early morning, on the drive to a hard appointment, or late at night when worry keeps you awake.

Prayers for My Parents

Lord, I bring my parents to You today. You know every season they have walked through, the years of work and worry, the choices they made when they had no certainty, and the quiet ways they have loved me even when I did not notice. Be near to them now. If their bodies are tired, give them strength for each day. If their minds are heavy with fear about money, health, or the future, give them a steady peace that does not depend on how things turn out.

Father, guard their marriage and their friendships. Where there is distance between them or between them and me, soften hearts and open the door to honest words. Give them wisdom for the decisions in front of them, and let them feel that they are not carrying every burden alone. Keep their faith strong when prayers seem unanswered, and let them see Your faithfulness in small things they might otherwise overlook.

Thank You for the gift of them. Help me to honor them with patience, kindness, and my presence, and show me how to care for them well in the seasons ahead. Let them rest in Your love today and know that they are held. Amen.

A Shorter Version to Pray in a Moment

Lord, my parents are on my heart right now. Give them rest, strength, and peace where they feel weak or afraid. Be close to them in what they are facing and in what I cannot see. Guard their hearts and their home, and help me love them well today. Thank You that they are never out of Your care. Amen.

Scriptures to Pray Alongside

Pray this over your parents as they go out and come in, asking God to keep their going and coming in every ordinary day, not only in the hard moments you can see.

Philippians 4:6-7

6 In nothing be anxious, but in everything, by prayer and petition with thanksgiving, let your requests be made known to God. 7 And the peace of God, which surpasses all understanding, will guard your hearts and your thoughts in Christ Jesus.

Use this passage to bring your parents’ worries into prayer, asking God to give them a peace that steadies their hearts when anxious thoughts come back.

Isaiah 40:29-31

29 He gives power to the weak. He increases the strength of him who has no might. 30 Even the youths faint and get weary, and the young men utterly fall; 31 But those who wait for the LORD will renew their strength. They will mount up with wings like eagles. They will run, and not be weary. They will walk, and not faint.

(WEB)

Pray this for parents who feel worn down, asking God to renew their strength so they can keep going without losing heart.

Proverbs 3:5-6

5 Trust in the LORD with all your heart, and don’t lean on your own understanding. 6 In all your ways acknowledge him, and he will make your paths straight.

Ephesians 6:2-3

2 “Honor your father and mother,” which is the first commandment with a promise: 3 “that it may be well with you, and you may live long on the earth.”

Pray this as a thankful prayer, asking God to bless your parents and to help you honor them in the way you speak and act toward them.

How to Pray This Prayer

Many people find it easiest to pray for their parents first thing in the morning, before the phone and the day’s demands take over. Sit somewhere quiet with a cup of tea or coffee, and let your hands rest open in your lap or hold a photo of them. If you live far away, you might pray the prayer while looking at a recent message from them, letting their words guide what you ask God to do.

You do not have to pray for your parents alone. Ask a sibling, a spouse, or a close friend to pray the prayer with you, either in person or over the phone. Some families keep a shared list and each person adds one line for the week. Whatever you choose, come back to the prayer regularly, because your parents’ needs will change and God is faithful through every stage.

A Blessing to Close

May the Lord bless your parents and keep them. May He make His face shine upon them and give them peace in the days ahead. May they feel the nearness of His love in ordinary moments, and may you, their child, be a source of rest and encouragement to them as they have been to you.
