This prayer is for parents, grandparents and others who love an adult child and find that the old habit of praying for them has not gone away just because they are grown. It can be read aloud as written, or used as a starting point for your own words. Pray it when you lie awake worrying about a decision, a relationship or a distance that feels impossible to close, or simply on an ordinary morning when their name comes to mind.
Prayer for an Adult Child
Lord, you know the name of the one I am praying for, and you know every road they are walking today. I confess that it is hard to let go of the child I once carried, fed and worried over. Some days I still reach for control, and I ask you to forgive me for the times I have tried to steer a life that now belongs to them. Give them wisdom for the choices in front of them, the job, the money, the marriage or the single years, the friendships that are changing and the faith they are still working out for themselves.
Father, protect them from harm they cannot see and from the quiet discouragement that comes when things do not go as planned. Where they have been hurt, be near to heal. Where they have wandered, draw them back with patience and kindness. Where they are doing well, keep them humble and grateful. Give me the grace to be a loving presence without being a burden, to speak when it is right and to stay silent when silence is the more loving gift. Let my words be few and my prayers many.
Thank you that their life is held in your hands, and that you love them more than I ever could. Remind me of that when I am tempted to fear. I trust you with them, today and in the years to come. Amen.
A Shorter Version to Pray in a Moment
Lord, you see the one I love, and I give them to you again right now. Guide their steps, guard their heart and meet them in whatever they are facing today. Help me to trust you more than I worry, and to love them in ways that honor their freedom. Keep us close even when we are far apart. Amen.

How to Pray This Prayer
Many parents find it helps to pray for their adult child at a set time, such as while the coffee brews in the morning or during the drive to work. Keep a short note on your phone with their name and one or two current needs, so you remember what to bring before God. If you can, sit somewhere quiet with your hands open in your lap or holding a small object that reminds you of them, such as a photograph or a ring.
You do not have to pray this alone. Ask a spouse, a close friend or a church prayer group to lift your child up too, and tell them honestly what is happening so they can pray with specifics. Some parents find it meaningful to pray the prayer together with their grown child on the phone or over a meal, as long as the child is comfortable with it.
A Blessing to Close
May the Lord bless your son or daughter and keep them safe in every season. May he make his face shine on them and give them peace that steadies their heart. May they know they are loved, and may they walk into each day held by the one who loves them most.
