This short morning prayer is for asking God to watch over an elderly parent as a new day begins. Pray it early, while the house is quiet, or sit beside your parent and read it together over coffee or breakfast. You can read it aloud exactly as written, or use it as a starting point and add the names, worries and small details that belong to your own family.
Short Morning Prayer for an Elderly Parent
Lord, thank you for this new morning and for the gift of another day with my mother (or father). Thank you that her years have been full of your faithfulness, and that you have not stopped being faithful now. Be near her as she gets out of bed. Steady her steps on the floor and in the bathroom, and keep her from falling. Give her strength for the small things that have become harder: buttoning a shirt, reaching a cup, remembering where she put her glasses.
Father, I bring you the worries I carry for her today. Calm her mind if fear or confusion wakes with her. Ease her pain and let her sleep last night be enough to carry her forward. Help her doctors listen well and her medicines work as they should. Give her good company today, a visit or a phone call that brightens her morning, and let her feel loved and not forgotten. Keep me patient when I am tired, gentle when I am frustrated, and honest when I need help. Let my care for her be an act of love and not just a duty. Amen.
A Shorter Version to Pray in a Moment
Lord, go before my parent this morning. Hold her steady on her feet, quiet her heart, and give her a clear mind for the hours ahead. Be with me too, and give me patience for every task we share today. Let this day, however ordinary, be held in your hands. Amen.

2 My help comes from the LORD, who made heaven and earth. 3 He will not allow your foot to be moved. He who keeps you will not slumber.

Jesus invites the weary to come to him for rest. Bring this verse to your parent’s tiredness, and to your own, and ask the Lord to give both of you rest in him.
How to Pray This Prayer
Choose a time when your parent is rested and not rushed, often right after she wakes or during her first cup of tea. Sit where you can hold her hand or rest a palm on her shoulder, and let your touch say what the words are reaching for. If she is able, invite her to pray a line or two herself, even if it is only “thank you, Lord.”
If you are not able to be with her in person, pray this over the phone or with a note left on the kitchen table. Other family members, a neighbor or a pastor can also pray it with you, and you can ask them to keep your parent in mind through the day. Praying the same words each morning builds a steady rhythm that can comfort both of you.
A Blessing to Close
May the Lord bless and keep her this day. May he make his face shine on her and give her peace in every hour. May she know she is loved, and may you, the one who cares for her, be strengthened by the same grace that sustains her.
