This bedtime prayer is written for an expectant mother who wants to hand the day to God before she sleeps. Pray it in the evening, once the house is quiet and the body is ready to rest, and read it aloud exactly as written or use it as a starting point for your own words.
Bedtime Prayer for an Expectant Mother
Lord, the day is ending and I am tired. My body has carried more today than it usually does, and my mind has run ahead to the birth, to the nights ahead, to the questions I cannot answer yet. I bring all of it to you now. Thank you for every small mercy from today: the cup of tea that tasted good, the walk that felt possible, the moment someone asked how I was doing and meant it. Take the weight I have been holding about the baby’s health and the labor that is coming. I do not have to carry those fears through the night.
Watch over the child growing within me. Keep them safe and strong, and keep the cord, the heartbeat and every stage of development in your care. Steady my breathing as I lie down, and let my back and hips rest. If sleep comes in pieces, meet me in each waking moment with calm. Guard my heart from comparison, from worry about what others expect, and from the voice that says I am not ready. Let me rest in the truth that you know this child already and that you have been faithful through every season of my life.
Be with my husband, my family and my friends who will care for us in the days to come. Give them patience and wisdom, and let them feel your nearness too. Tonight I set down the day and trust you with the night and with what tomorrow holds. Quiet my thoughts, and let me sleep in your peace. Amen.
A Shorter Version to Pray in a Moment
Lord, I am weary and I am carrying a child. Thank you for this day and for the strength you gave me in it. Calm my worries about the birth and about the little one growing inside me. Keep us both safe through the night, and let me wake refreshed and ready for what comes. Into your hands I place my body, my baby and my rest. Amen.

How to Pray This Prayer
Choose a time about thirty minutes before you plan to sleep, when the lights are low and the day’s tasks are finished. Sit or lie in a comfortable position, with one hand resting on your belly, so that your prayer is connected to the child you are praying for. Read the prayer slowly, pausing after each sentence to breathe and let the words settle.
If someone else is in the home, invite them to pray it with you or to read the blessing over you at the end. Many expectant mothers find that hearing a trusted partner, mother or friend speak these words makes the prayer feel more real. If you cannot sleep, return to the shorter version whenever you wake through the night.
A Blessing to Close
May the Lord who keeps you keep you still tonight. May he guard your body, calm your heart and hold the child within you in his hands. May you wake to a new morning with strength enough for the day, and may the peace of God, which surpasses understanding, rest on you until the dawn.
