This short prayer for bereaved parents is written for the mother or father who has lost a child, whether that loss was recent or many years ago. It is meant for the quiet hours of grief: the early morning before the house wakes, the drive home from the cemetery, the sleepless night when the empty room feels too loud. You can read it aloud exactly as written, or use it as a starting point and speak your own words to God in the same spirit.

Short Prayer for Bereaved Parents

Father, I come to you with a grief I cannot carry alone. My child is gone, and the ache of that loss sits in every room of my home and every ordinary moment of my day. Some mornings I forget for a second and reach for them, and then the truth lands again. I do not know how to live in a world without them, and I am tired of pretending that I do.

Be close to me when the questions come at three in the morning, the ones with no answers. Hold my anger and my silence as well as my tears, because I do not have the words for all of it. Steady my breathing when the memories crowd in, and remind me that you saw my child, knew them by name, and have not lost track of them. Give me enough strength for the next hour, and then the one after that.

Comfort the others who love this child, and be near to the people who grieve with me and sometimes grieve differently. Keep me from measuring my sorrow against anyone else’s. Let me rest in your faithfulness even when I cannot feel it, and help me trust that you are holding both my child and me. Amen.

A Shorter Version to Pray in a Moment

Lord, I am breaking apart right now, and I need you to hold me. My child is gone, and the pain is too much to hold by myself. Be near to me in this moment, steady my heart, and remind me that you are close to the brokenhearted. Hold my child in your care, and hold me until I can breathe again. Amen.

Scriptures to Pray Alongside

Psalm 34:18

The LORD is near to those who have a broken heart, and saves those who have a crushed spirit.

(WEB)

Pray this verse when you feel crushed and want to believe that God is nearer than your pain. Ask him to make that nearness real to you today, even in small ways you can barely notice.

Psalm 56:8

You count my wanderings. You put my tears into your bottle. Aren’t they in your book?

(WEB)

This verse speaks to a parent who cries alone at night. Bring your tears to God as something he already knows and treasures, and ask him to receive each one as a prayer.

Matthew 5:4

Blessed are those who mourn, for they shall be comforted.

(WEB)

Read this slowly and let it be a promise rather than a command. Thank Jesus that grief is not a sign of failure, and ask him to bring the comfort he has promised in his own time.

Romans 8:38-39

38 For I am persuaded that neither death, nor life, nor angels, nor principalities, nor things present, nor things to come, nor powers, 39 nor height, nor depth, nor any other created thing, will be able to separate us from God’s love, which is in Christ Jesus our Lord.

(WEB)

When you fear that your child is beyond God’s reach, pray these words slowly. Ask the Lord to strengthen your trust that nothing, not even death, has cut your child off from his love.

2 Corinthians 1:3-4

3 Blessed be the God and Father of our Lord Jesus Christ, the Father of mercies and God of all comfort; 4 who comforts us in all our affliction, that we may be able to comfort those who are in any affliction, through the comfort with which we ourselves are comforted by God.

(WEB)

Pray this passage with gratitude for the God who comforts, and ask him to show you where he has sent others to help. Then ask to be ready, in time, to offer that same comfort to someone else.

How to Pray This Prayer

Many bereaved parents find it helps to pray this prayer at a fixed time, such as early morning with a cup of tea or in the car before going into work. Choose a chair you can sit in comfortably and keep a box of tissues nearby. If it is too hard to read the words, you can pray them silently, whisper them, or simply hold the page while you let God meet you in the silence.

You might also keep a photograph of your child in your hands while you pray, or touch something that belonged to them. Invite a trusted friend, a pastor, or your spouse to pray it with you, or to pray it over you when you cannot find the strength to speak. Shared prayer does not replace your own, but it can remind you that you are not the only one carrying this loss.

A Blessing to Close

May the God of all comfort draw close to the parent who grieves today. May he steady the heart that aches, and hold the child who is safe in his keeping. May you find rest in his faithfulness, one breath at a time, and may his peace guard you through every hour that lies ahead.
