This is a daily prayer for children’s friendships, written for parents, grandparents, teachers and anyone who cares about a child’s relationships with other kids. It is meant to be prayed in the morning before school, at bedtime, or whenever you learn that a friendship is going well or going badly. You can read it aloud exactly as written, or use it as a starting point and change the words to fit your child and your own heart.
Daily Prayer for Children’s Friendships
Lord, you know every child by name, and you know the friends they will meet today. Thank you for the gift of friendship, and for the way a good friend can make a hard day easier. I ask you to be near the friendships my child already has. Help them be kind when kindness is hard, honest when it would be easier to go along, and generous when someone is left out. Where there is misunderstanding or hurt, go before us and show us how to repair what is broken.
Protect my child from friends who would lead them into harm, cruelty or shame. Give them the wisdom to notice who is safe and who is not, and the courage to walk away when they need to. For the child who feels lonely at lunch or on the playground, let them see that you have not forgotten them. Open a door to someone who will value them as you do. Teach me to listen well when they tell me about their day, so I can help them carry what weighs on them. Amen.
A Shorter Version to Pray in a Moment
Father, my child is among people today, and I cannot be with them. Surround them with friends who are kind and loyal, and guard them from anyone who would wound them. Give them a gentle heart and a steady spirit. Where they feel left out, remind them that you see them and that they belong to you. Help me trust you with their friendships. Amen.

Ecclesiastes 4:9-10
9 Two are better than one, because they have a good reward for their labor. 10 For if they fall, the one will lift up his fellow; but woe to him who is alone when he falls, and doesn’t have another to lift him up.
(WEB)
Use this passage to thank God for the help a friend can give when a child stumbles. Ask him to bring your child a companion who lifts them up, and to make your child the kind of friend who helps others stand.

A man of many companions may be ruined, but there is a friend who sticks closer than a brother.

Philippians 2:3-4
3 Doing nothing through rivalry or through conceit, but in humility, each counting others better than himself; 4 each of you not just looking to his own things, but each of you also to the things of others.
(WEB)
Ask God to shape your child’s heart so they look out for the good of their friends and not only for their own wishes. Pray that this humility will make their friendships more honest and more generous.
How to Pray This Prayer
Many families find it helpful to pray in the car on the way to school or at the kitchen table before breakfast. Keep a small note in your bag or on the fridge so the words are close at hand. If you are praying for a child who is not in the room, you might place your hand on something that reminds you of them, such as their backpack or a photograph, as a physical reminder to keep them in your thoughts through the day.
You can also invite a spouse, a grandparent, a friend or a Sunday school teacher to pray it with you. A child whose friendships are struggling often benefits when several adults who love them are lifting the same concerns. If your child is old enough, ask them what they would like you to pray about, and let their answers shape the words you use.
A Blessing to Close
May the Lord go before your child into every room they enter today. May he give them friends who love them well, and may they be a friend who brings light to others. May they know, in every lonely moment, that they are known and loved by God.
