This prayer is for the ordinary needs that come round every morning: bread for the table, rent or groceries, the fuel for the car, the strength to get through work. You can pray it first thing as the day begins, or at any point when worry about money, food, or the next few weeks starts to crowd out everything else. Read it aloud exactly as written, or use it as a starting point and put your own words in where your situation calls for them.

Prayer for Daily Provision

Father, I come to you this morning with the things on my mind before I have even got out of bed. I am thinking about the bills on the counter, the price of food at the store, and the number in my bank account that does not stretch as far as I wish it would. Some days I try to carry all of it myself, and by the afternoon I am tired and short-tempered with the people I love. Please help me set that weight down in your hands right now.

Thank you that you already know what I need before I ask. Give me enough for today, and help me trust you with tomorrow instead of trying to store up a fear-filled plan for every month ahead. Show me where I can work wisely and where I need to let go. Keep me honest about what I want and what I truly need, and make me grateful for the provision you have already given. Guard my heart from envy and from panic. Amen.

A Shorter Version to Pray in a Moment

Lord, I am worried about money and about whether there will be enough. Give me what I need for today, and help me rest in your care for tomorrow. Show me the next faithful step and give me the wisdom to take it. Thank you for every good thing you have already provided, even the small ones. Guard my heart from fear. Amen.

Scriptures to Pray Alongside

Matthew 6:11

Give us today our daily bread.

(WEB)

Jesus taught his followers to pray for daily bread, which means asking for today’s needs rather than a year’s worth. Pray this line slowly and let it shape the size of your request. You are asking for enough for this day, and you are trusting the Father to supply it.

Philippians 4:19

My God will supply every need of yours according to his riches in glory in Christ Jesus.

(WEB)

Paul writes this to a church that had been generous to him, and it reminds us that God’s supply is never empty. When money feels thin, pray this verse back to God by naming the specific needs on your list and placing them under his promise.

Psalm 37:25

I have been young, and now am old, yet I have not seen the righteous forsaken, nor his children begging for bread.

(WEB)

The psalmist speaks from long experience of watching God care for his people. Use this verse to remember the faithfulness of God across your own life, and let memory strengthen your trust for the present worry.

Matthew 6:33

But seek first God’s Kingdom, and his righteousness; and all these things will be given to you as well.

(WEB)

Jesus turns our attention from anxious striving to the kingdom and its justice. Pray this verse as a request to have your priorities set in the right order, so that your daily work and choices serve what matters most.

Psalm 145:15-16

15 The eyes of all wait for you. You give them their food in due season. 16 You open your hand, and satisfy the desire of every living thing.

(WEB)

These verses picture every living creature looking to God for food at the right time. Pray them as a reminder that you are among those he feeds, and ask him to open your hands to receive and to share.

How to Pray This Prayer

Many people find it helpful to pray this prayer while standing at the kitchen counter with a cup of coffee, or sitting in the car before walking into work. Keep something in your hands while you pray, such as a loaf of bread, a bill, or a bag of groceries, so that your body remembers the physical reality of God’s provision. If you are praying for someone else, read the prayer aloud with them, changing “I” to “we” or to their name.

Consider asking a trusted friend or your small group to pray the shorter version with you once a week. Shared prayer over money can loosen the grip of shame, and it gives you a person to check in with when the next bill arrives.

A Blessing to Close

May the God who feeds the sparrows and clothes the fields be near to you today. May he give you bread enough for the day, peace enough for the hour, and courage enough for the next step. May you rest in his faithful care and go forward knowing that you are never left without what you truly need.
