This short prayer for family health is written for the moments when you want to bring your household’s bodies, worries and fears before God in plain words. It can be prayed at the breakfast table, at a bedside, in the car before a doctor’s appointment, or late at night when sleep will not come. Read it aloud exactly as written, or use it as a starting point and speak your own names and needs into the pattern.

Short Prayer for Family Health

Lord, you know every person in our home by name, and you know the things that keep us awake. We bring you the health of our family today. Be near the ones who are sick, and give rest to the ones who are worn out from caring for them. Steady the hands of the doctors and nurses, and give wisdom to every decision we have to make about treatment, medicine and appointments. Where there is fear in our hearts, replace it with trust that you are present with us.

Protect the children as they grow, and keep the older ones strong as their bodies change. Watch over anyone who is pregnant, recovering from surgery, living with a long illness, or waiting for test results. Give us patience with one another when tempers run short because we are tired. Help us to take care of our bodies with good food, enough sleep and honest rest, and to ask for help when we need it. We trust you with what we cannot control. Amen.

A Shorter Version to Pray in a Moment

Father, our family needs your healing and your peace today. Be with the sick ones and the ones who are caring for them. Guide the people who treat us, and keep our home full of your strength. Thank you that you hear us even when we have no words left. Amen.

Scriptures to Pray Alongside

Psalm 103:2-3

2 Praise the LORD, my soul, and don’t forget all his benefits; 3 who forgives all your sins; who heals all your diseases…

(WEB)

Pray this as a way of remembering what God has already done for your family. Name one past mercy you have seen, then ask him to heal and restore the illness you are facing now.

Isaiah 40:29-31

29 He gives power to the weak. He increases the strength of him who has no might. 30 Even the youths faint and get weary, and the young men utterly fall; 31 But those who wait for the LORD will renew their strength. They will mount up with wings like eagles. They will run, and not be weary. They will walk, and not faint.

(WEB)

Use this verse when someone in the house is exhausted from illness or caregiving. Ask God to give strength to the weary, and to let each person rest in him when their own strength gives out.

Jeremiah 17:14

Heal me, O the LORD, and I will be healed. Save me, and I will be saved; for you are my praise.

(WEB)

Speak this one over a family member who is in pain. Ask God to be the one who heals, and to bring them the relief only he can give.

Matthew 11:28

“Come to me, all you who labor and are heavily burdened, and I will give you rest.

(WEB)

Pray this for anyone in your household who is carrying the weight of worry about their health or someone else’s. Invite them to bring that burden to Jesus and to receive his rest.

3 John 1:2

Beloved, I pray that you may prosper in all things and be healthy, even as your soul prospers.

(WEB)

This short verse is a blessing from one believer to another, and you can pray it over each person you love. Ask that their body would be well and their soul would be doing well too.

How to Pray This Prayer

Many families find it helps to pray this prayer at a fixed moment each day, such as over breakfast or just before bed, so that the family’s health becomes part of the rhythm of the household. Keep a small card with the names of the sick or recovering people written on it, and read the names aloud as you pray. Pausing to name each person makes the prayer personal rather than general.

Your hands can join the prayer too. Hold the hand of a child, rest a palm on a sick person’s shoulder, or fold your hands over a bottle of medicine or a set of test results while you pray. Invite a spouse, grandparent or friend to pray the words with you, taking turns reading one paragraph each. Praying together spreads the weight of the concern across more hearts than your own.

A Blessing to Close

May the Lord keep every member of this family in his care, and may his strength be made perfect in weakness. May he bring healing where there is sickness and peace where there is fear. May each person in this home rest in the knowledge that they are known, loved and held.
